This is a shame!

We forgot to celebrate or at least remember the Birthday of the greatest composer ever!

Yesterday was Johann Sebastian Bach's 330th Birthday. Since I was about 13 years old his music means incredibly much to me and is an essential part of my life.

I think he stopped celebrating birthdays after hitting the third century mark.

Besides, a meaningless thread on AK is nothing compared to people listening to his music, on a regular basis.

I didn't forget, there was a news item about musicians playing Bach in the subway system here in NYC to celebrate his birthday. So I played the Brandenburg Concertos & "Bach's Greatest Hits' with breakfast on Saturday morning.

Happy belated

J.S. Bach: Das Kantatenwerk Gustav Leonhardt Tölzer Knabenchor (Chorus Master: Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden) & King's College Choir Cambridge (Chorus Master: David Willcocks) / Leonhardt-Consort Telefunken 6.35030 vol. 4

I really really love this Cantata release. I have some vinyl albums of this Harnoncourt/Leonhardt release and the complete on 60 CD's!

But I LIKE Beck, I have a couple different copies of Sea Change (DVD-A, SACD, CD, etc) and Morning Phase.

Not forgotten by me. on the 21st, I spun a compilation that i recorded, that I call, A Week of Pure Bach - A five concerts in seven days week of pure Bach music. I've also been spinning other Bach recordings all month.

I seem to recall that Bach's output was prodigious. Someone figured out that FOR EVERY DAY OF HIS LIFE, FROM BIRTH TO DEATH, he averaged something like 20 pages of music A DAY!

I think it was college music appreciation, I forget, but that factoid stuck with me.

Off to spin Toccata and Fugue in D minor (the saddest of all chords).

Folks when did you listen to the Passacaglia the last time? (Passacaglia c minor BWV 582)

This piece of music is absolutely BREATHTAKING! And it is such a hard one to play for sure...!

Of course one of the great pieces by Bach...I've got recordings of it by Albert Schweitzer, Fritz Heitmann, Carl Weinrich, and Ernest White.

Most sources give Bach a birthday of March 31 though some say March 21, let's have a 10 day Bachfest.

I saw him recently, and I swear he didn't look a day over 329.

The rigor mortis probably wreaked havoc on his playing though. I can't imagine he's able to rip on the harpsichord the way he did back in his more-conscious days.
