Thorens 124 Fine Speed Adjustment Help/Tips

Hi all, I am nearly complete with my first restoration. Everything is going really well but the I'm having a tough time getting the fine speed adjustment working properly. Does anyone with experience have any tips on this? All the parts are there, it just isn't "grabbing" the edge of the rod to move it. I've tried different pressures of the top part moving it up and down the shaft (that's what she said) but it makes no difference in the operation. I even added a thin layer of grease to make the bottom smoother, making sure to not get any on the top. I also tried putting a piece of electrical tape along the edge where the rotating top makes contact, still nothing. Any thoughts? Thanks for any help! It's greatly appreciated.

Try turning the bushing with the set screws upside down. I had that problem when I took mine apart for service. I couldn't get it to work. I flipped the bushing and it started working. Don't use any grease on the bushing or the bottom part it will slip. The pressure between the 2 bushings grabbing the arm is what makes it move. Plus the pressure on the bushing has to be just right.
 
I'll clean those parts and flip the bushing again. I tried flipping it, but didn't mess with it too long and gave up pretty quick as it didn't have any affect. I've messed with this thing for hours so far. I'll try anything at this point!
 
The more I look at your picture you might have to much pressure on the spring. Raise the bushing up a little. It doesn't take a lot of pressure to move the arm. Also did you take the stepped pulley apart and eddy brake? Does that area move freely? If that area is not put together right would cause problems with the arm moving freely also.
 
Good suggestions! I actually worked with the eddy brake quite a bit and as I've been battling speed issues also. I checked the round bracket (need to find the actual name) that connects to the rod, under the stepped pulley. I rebuilt that last night to make sure it was as smooth as possible. I've tried several pressures on the bushing, but will check that again. Thanks!
