Thorens 145 or JVC QL-A75

If you guys had a choice to make one of these your main system turntable, would you choose Thorens 145 or JVC QL-A75 (straight tonearm) ? I haven't done any side by side comparisons but just wanted to hear peoples opinions. Thanks

There are arguments to be made for both. The Thorens is a lot simpler mechanically, and way easier to repair if things go south. The JVC is microprocessor controlled, and good luck if anything internal goes bad. However, if it's working properly, it's a fine 'table - and I'd rather have the arm on the JVC than the Thorens.

As in most things in vintage audio, condition condition condition.

An interesting choice as they are very different. I'm a Thorens fan, but I agree that in good condition the JVC will sound and look great.

I'm a Thorens fan and owner of two 145, and since I don't know anything about the JVC, I wont say anything against it.

The Thorens 145 is a very good TT, and very easy to set up or repair if it needs be. The tonearm is sometime underrated by some peoples, but overall it's very good, able to accept quite a variety of catridges, MM/MI or MC, very versatile.

At the end of day, buy the one you like.

I have both a Thorens (166 Mk II) and a JVC (QLA-7). Enjoy them both.
 
If the price is right I would buy them both, try them out and decide which one to keep. Both are good. The JVC is rare and would be my pick.

I have both - I was wondering if there was a general consensus on which one was better. I guess it's time for some listening tests. I can only keep one in the living room.

Thorens has the Audio Technica AT440MLA Cartridge and the JVC has the Shure M97xE Cartridge.. I don't know if that's fair to compare ....maybe I will have to do a round 1 then swap the cartridges.

Your ears are always going to be better than our opinions. :yes:

You need to do the test, swap cartridges and do it again, then report your findings.

Im not a fan of either cartridge but if i had to choose one for the JVC I'd pick the AT to my ears the M97XE is not so great sounding cartridge no matter what mumbo jumbo some might tell you to do to it..................
 
I think my thorens 145 with the AT440 sounds great...so good that I dont want to mess with it and take it off to try on the JVC. As it stands now the JVC withe the M97 sounds significantly duller than the Thorens. I'm either going to have to buy another cart or live with it. I am not overly impressed with the M97, I've had it a few weeks now.
