Thorens outer platter question...

Hello,

I have a Thorens TD 146 that I'm trying to restore. Does anyone know which Thorens models share the same platter with the TD146? For example, I've seen a platter for the TD160 listed in ebay. Would this fit my TD146 as well? Thanks in advance for your replies!

Thorens platters for the TD series are pretty standard, the TD160 should be fine, The TD125-126 variants were ballanced, but carry the same demensions.

Thanks for replying. My current platter is quite beat up and I’m planning to have it polished or maybe even repainted. I just want to have a back up plan in case it doesn’t turn out well.
 
Depending on just how "beat up" your platter is, there are a number of threads here that provide ways to polish it. Do a search on Thorens platter polish" and you will see. Some have had very good success by spinning the platter while polishing (see details in the threads) which is said to eliminate the tendency for an uneven sheen. By most accounts, this is quite do-able and again, depending on the condition of your platter. Some pics would be helpful to determine what you might hope to expect....

However, I believe others have had even better results with the spinning technique. I can tell you that mine was not a "forever" shine and it needs to be repeated every once in a while as it appears tarnished again over time.

The ultimate answer if your problem is purely cosmetic is to find a local jobbing machine shop and have them run a diamond cutter over the rim. You will lose~ 5 thou . All bright and shiny.
Finish with Carnuba wax.
Failing that just use 000 then 0000 steel wool to remove the crap and if you want a high polish move on to car paint polishing products.
Clean residue with Naptha or Acetone and wax as before.
