Thorens recap?

There is a cap and a resistor in the thorens td165. How important is it to use mkt cap again in this circuit? I ordered a mkp and then saw somebody on eBay selling kits for the thorens and they used some mumbo jumbo about the importance of mkt in the circuit, which doesn't have to do with audio but speed control I believe. Something about how mkt caps fail "closed" rather than "open". It's a safety thing as far as I understand it. Is this accurate? Thanks for any input
Edit: I uploaded a photo of what I thought was a resistor but it's a ceramic disc capacitor I think? I can't find anything on the td165 service center manual about this part. Any help?

its more about the type of cap. The ceramic shown is a 250 vac 10nf "X" type, which is an across the line cap. If thats the one across the switch, its effectively across the mains when the switch is off. The other cap in there is the phase offset cap, which I guess is also technically across the line. Y type are line to chassis.

honestly the dielectric and all that matters very little here. Get an X rated cap of the same value and voltage and it will work just fine.

is there some reason you're replacing these? Ceramics tend to be pretty reliable, so if this is working and not making pop noises when you shut it off I'd honestly be inclined to just leave it alone.

Thanks for the info. I'm not changing it out I did read that ceramic disc capacitors don't need to be changed out very often.

Unless the ceramic cap is defective, usually caused when the cap is mechanically damaged, or exposed to gross overvoltage, it will never need replacement. They don't degrade over time if competently designed & manufactured.
 
If it helps any, my Thorens 160 still rocks it's original caps from 1974 and its never given me any hint that they aren't happy with life.
