Thorens TD 124 Replacement Motor

My father-in-law gave me about 1000 LPs and a Thorens TD 124.

The LPs look like they have hardly if ever been played, but the Thorens is not so good. The motor is shot, and it either needs to rebuilt (if that is possible) or replaced.

I know that Thorens does not make any replacement motors, but I understand that another copy by the name of Papst manufactured replacement/upgrade motors.

So does anyone know where I might be able to get a replacement motor for the Thorens TD 124?

A 124? Nice! Oh, I mean just send it my way. It's nothing you want.

In all seriousness, I can't answer your question. But, I'd love to see picts, as some claim the 124 is the best TT ever made. (Well, at least within a reasonable price range.) If you ever decide to part with it...

I would think the Thorens forum at Vinyl Engine might be a really good resource for answers to your questions. I've noticed they're a little slow responding sometimes, so you have to be patient...

if you can get a mtr for it do it. I've got a td124, had it 30odd yrs. A real tank, 17lb platter, belt drv, speed adj. Bought it used back in 70s. Put on a shure sme 3009/II tonearm.
You can get belts for it too.

Have you tried adding a drop of light machine oil to each bushing of the motor that you have? I don't know where to get another motor, but I have revived a few motors with lubrication.

Bill, Have you resolved your TD124 motor issue? If not here's the straight scoop. Pabst did make replacement motors for The Thorens TD124 for a brief time after Thorens quit produciongn themselves. These motors were superior and came out in 2 kits. One fopr the European market at 220V, 50Hz and the other for countries operating on 110V-120V, 60 Hz. They are very very difficult to locate. I just saw a 220V model go on eBay for $290 USD.

On the other hand. You can buy original but used TD124 motors on eBay from time to time. Prices vary depending on condition but be prepared to spend up to $200USD.

I suspect your table is a MkI but either a MkI or MkII motor will do. The MkII is a later table and there are fewer of them so the parts are, of course, more expensive when beoing parted out.
