Thorens TD 124 TT Refurbishing Services

Currently, I am using a Pioneer TT until I get my Thorens TD124 refurbished. Which leads to my question? I have seen advertisement after advertisement on Ebay for refurbishment services ranging from modest $350 prices to the super, grandiose slate plinth rebuilds by Thorens-certified supermen for $1800. While I do want a good job, how do I know I am getting a good job and I can trust who is doing the job?

Can anyone recommend a good Thorens TT refurbisher?

Thank you all in advance.

JEC 965 and Sumthinsilly (STS turntables) on Ebay both do great work. I would trust either one of them. JEC is in Pennsylvania and STS in Tennessee.

I had Jim Campbell restore mine. Did a great job. I also love the slate plinth he provided.

I have no doubt that the slate plinth is great, but I suggest avoiding the slate armboard. I found that it amplified motor noise (= rumble) and had a 'harder,' less musical sound than hardwood. But I'm sure it works fine as a foundation.

That's interesting to hear as I've actually only used the slate armboard on my table. I obviously can't state that it's more or less musical since I haven't tried the wood, but I have not noticed any motor noise/rumble being transmitted in my configuration. I have the table affixed to the slate plinth without using mushrooms and the plinth is spiked. I'll have to try a wood board one day to hear what the difference is.

I'm also trying to decide between the two services.

The one thing that might keep me from going with STS is that he sells turntables, for $4000, which he advertises as "professionally" and "fully" restored", "built to original build condition", then puts a disclaimer stating that "All electronics and vintage turntables are sold as is and not warrantied due to their age".
I am sure that he does excellent work, but I want to know that he will stand behind that work should an issue arise.

On the other hand, I have heard nothing but good things about Jim Campbell's customer service.

Great point. There is absolutely no warranty at all indicated on their website.

I'm not sticking up for one our the other that's why I recommended both. I have done business with both and both are great guy's. It may not say a warranty on STS's site but he will back his work just like all good business's do. Also I didn't see mention of a warranty on JEC's ebay site either.
