Hello all,
New member here looking for some suggestions for a receiver and speakers.
A local Bushwick, Brooklyn seller posted an ad on Craigslist for a Thorens TD-147 Gold Jubilee Edition with a rosewood veneer finish (pics below): new Thakker belt, Ortofon VMS 30 MKII cartridge w/new elliptical stylus and original Thorens tonearm and dust cover (some scratches but nothing majorly distracting). I believe he is an AK member as well, but in order to maintain privacy, no names will be mentioned at this time (the turntable is pretty unique and easily recognizable, especially with it's slightly raised, but fully functional cueing knob, so if he would like to comment, feel free).
Anyway, this seller/member was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and he gave me a lengthy demo. I think we made a fair deal, especially since this table is basically plug and play, which fits nicely into my plan to match this beauty up with a vintage receiver from the 70's with a solid phono stage. Any suggestions for a good fit?
Although I'd like to keep the main components vintage, I am considering these new Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 speakers. In addition to the generally positive performance reviews, the rosewood finish would match the table almost perfectly.
The whole setup will be in my small home office so I'm not looking to shake the earth. I'm more interested in getting the best quality sound than throwing a house party.
As far a budget goes, I am flexible. I'd rather spend a bit more upfront and get all this right from the beginning and not have to worry about upgrading later. Speakers $300-ish, Vintage receiver $200-ish. Also, I'm not in a terrible hurry either, so I will be looking on Craigslist, ebay and the AK marketplace, as well. My old man and I also actively go to estate sales and garage sales, so there is that too.
I will primarily be listening to 60's and 70's rock (psych, garage, proto-punk), Post Punk, New Wave, some modern indie stuff and possibly some Soul, R&B, Funk and Groove.
I'd appreciate any helpful comments and/or suggestions. Am I on the right track? What should I be looking out for?
