Thorens TD-150 project part two

Here we are, the poly finish took a wee bit longer than I expected (Roughly a bazillion coats :D). I would apply three or four coats of high gloss poly then sand it smooth, this continued until all of the grain was filled and I had a smooth glassy finish. While I was applying poly and sanding it back off I machined the counter sunk mounting holes in the top plate and shot it satin black.

Tell you what folks I had the good fortune of looking at this in person today and with the burled maple arm board and platter it was absolutely stunning. A true work of art from a master craftsman!

Haven't been on much in the last two weeks. Was out in Chicago training for my new job. Glad to see things haven't changed round here!

Gentlemen, we have a completed Platenspeler! When I did the initial mock ups I found quite a bit of motor noise in the aluminum top plate, so I spent last night applying Dynamat to the back side of the top plate and to the T-Bar.

I then put together the top plate assembly.

This morning I machined the holes on the mounting blocks for the top plate assembly, installed the assembly, oiled the bearing well and seated the inner platter.

Well, I couldn’t stand it, I installed a bottom feeder Pro-Ject arm on it with a 44Mla, so I would have something on there to work out any bugs, so far it has a little electrical hum but that is about it.

I stole the arm & cart off of my garage table (Music Hall MMF 2.1), the reasoning being that I have spent a lot of time with this table in the garage, so I am familiar with the sound of the arm and cart combination. I will withhold any thoughts about the sound until I have spent some more time with it, the one thing I will say is DAMN! it is black, very, very quiet. It is playing through an Adcom 545, Adcom 555 pre and Cornwalls, not what you would call a forgiving system.

I just got home from giving it the initial listen and it has a pretty bright future, best garage sound I have heard that is for sure! As always well done Mel, superb craftsmanship. When you get it fine tuned I will be over to give it a listen on the main system. :thmbsp:

That's 2 great looking machines, the turntable and the car. Mind sharing the details on that? Make, year, mods etc. Yes I know that's off topic but its too good looking to pass it by.

You betcha, That is a 1940 Ford pickup, it has all of the tweaks, independent front suspension, AC, small block Chevy, Ford nine inch, the works. If it sits still for very long at Casa Divotdog, it gets modified! :D

BTW that is my chief technician standing on it, my 5 year old granddaughter who we are raising. All mods must pass her approval. :D

While off topic, I should point out the short box Chevy to the left of the '40 Ford pickup with a very well-built motor. It does some scary things to pavement in 4WD! :yikes:

Alrighty then, I have a few impressions of the table now, I think we are going to move it to the main system for awhile and spend some time with it.

Early impressions so far, this is the same cart and arm that were on the Music hall, and I can say that they sound much (not a little bit) better on this table, they are still the limiting factor here though, the table sounds as good as the stock TD-150, this is where I think the Pro-Ject arm is limiting it, a better arm is going to sound considerably better. The one thing I have noticed so far is how black the table is, if you set the stylus in a locked groove it is dead silent to 12 o’clock on the volume control (far above any listening levels). I am waiting for a second set of ears and I will put it on the main and follow up.

Your TD150 is looking very good.I like the motor plate you made.I have a modified TD150 also,with a custom made Analogue innovation Sole sub-chassis,Mose/Hercules psu and more.What I'd like to know is can you make a motor plate for my TD150? I'd like it have a 2 motor mounts stock and at 7o'clock and will also like to use the Linn plate type of mounting as I will be building a new plinth to go with a custom motor plste

I have no idea how I miss your rebuild projects DD, very nice looking table. I really like the lines and simplicity of this one. Shows to go ya that less is more most times, again nice looking table. :thmbsp:
