Thorens TD124 chassis wire to tone arm ground

I got a second hand Thorens 124 and it looks like a previous owner hooked up a wire from the chassis to the tone arm ground wire. Is that weird?

I am trying to chase down a problem where one speaker goes out when playing the turntable. I doubt this is the problem but I was wondering if this wire is necessary. I might have to replace the tone arm wire and I wonder if I should just snip the chassis ground wire off.

Thoughts?

Yeah. That where the chassis ground wire starts. But is it supposed to be done this way? The blue wire looks attached to the tone arm ground (black wire). Don’t know what the yellow wire is for.

Is there a better way to ground the chassis?

thanks.

Any chance the wires for the bad channel are frayed? I'm wondering if that channel's signal wire has shorted to ground.

Other than this being an amateur half baked job - grounding the 5th TA grounding wire to the chassis lug is standard practice. I'm guessing the yellow wire is hooked to the right channel return path (shield) under the electrical tape and to the chassis on the other end. It's standard practice as well - just very poorly executed. In fact, this flimsy connection could be the reason for your channel cutting out.

I’ll have to check that out. Is there a diagram somewhere about how it supposed to be connected?

Thanks!

Seems a possibility. It looks like the original wires.

This is an updated 1956 TD-124 owners manual wiring diagram, excluding the mono options. It's valid for nearly all turntables:
