This is pretty simple, but thought the pics might save someone a little bit of time if they have to adjust the timing of the auto shutoff feature of the Thorens TD146. I had to adjust it as the TD146 I bought off of e-bay was shipped without the transport hold downs having been screwed down and the tonearm counterweight not removed - despite the fact that this is printed in three languages on the turntable itself with arrows pointing to the screws and tonearm! I mean geez, I don't want to rant here, but is it asking too much of e-bay sellers to simply read the instructions? :drool:
Anyway. Since the tonearm had not been properly secured and shipped with the counterweight in place, the auto shutoff feature did not work correctly upon arrival. It didn't work at all. The entire reason for buying this turntable was to get the auto shutoff feature for those times when it is convenient to have the TT turn itself off.
Adjustment is simple.
1) Remove the bottom cover.
2) Look for an aluminum cover at the base of the tonearm. Just below is a set screw, attached to a piece of metal that is flat on one side and has a pointed part on the other side.
3) On my 146, the PC board has the text "D110" embossed on it. The pointy part should be pointing at the top of the D110 text. This should be good enough for a first attempt at adjustment and you may not need to do anymore than this.
4) Moving the metal plate to the left causes the auto shutoff to occur sooner. Moving the plate to the right causes the auto shutoff to occur later.
5) Tighten the screw once you have it situated properly and test with a record. Re-adjust if necessary.
Note that that it appears the TD146 auto shutoff feature is not a 100% solution. Some albums, due to the end of record run out, will not trigger the auto shutoff. It appears a certain quickness to the exit grooves is required to trigger the feature. It works fine on Elektra records, but not on Capricorn (Allman Bros. Eat A Peach, for example).
