Thorens TD166 MII local ad (pics)

I answered a local add today where a guy was cleaning out his house and was selling his old Thorens TD166 MII turntable. He was asking $300.00 CAD for it but he said he would go as low as $200.00. I said SOLD! I have it all hooked up and it sounds amazing. The man I bought it from was the original owner, he has kept it completely stock with the original Empire 800 UFR cart and he has kept it in storage for 30 years. Pics below!

Nice!

Did you ask if he had other gear or albums?
He was in the process of cleaning out his basement (which is why he was selling the turntable) and he said he would send me a list of his records when he came across them. He said that he gave the rest of his vintage gear to his brother years ago and his brother is using the stuff in his workshop. I cringe to think about what components are being showered with sawdust and smoke as we speak!

Nice! The first upgrade you can do is get rid of that crappy Thorens platter mat. Get yourself a cork & rubber mat! Sounds much better! My Thorens TD-160 came with that Thorens platter mat. Tried many kinds of platter mat materials, most better than that Thorens mat. Cork & rubber mat sounds the best to me. :music:

I love it! Looking for one now

I too have a 166 MkII w/ TP11 MkIII tonearm from 1984 with Shure V15 V-MR (refurbished by Vinyl Nirvana) - love it! Soon to replace the styli with Shibata. Anticipating beautiful music............ Thinking of replacing the original 4mm rubber mat (like yours). Thoughts, suggestions? Heard good things about cork (Hudson Hi-Fi).

Ya I was looking at Vinyl Nirvanas refers! But it looks like he is no longer refurbishing this model :(. I have also been shopping for new mats as well but they seem to either be $250 or $20 but leave cork residue on your records!... have also been looking at record clamps as suggested by Vinyl Nirvana.
