Well, at least I know I'm not going crazy. I was just listening to and enjoying Beethoven's Sonata No. 1, Op.12 in D for violin and piano, Isaac Stern and Eugene Istomin, on CBS Masterworks I2M 39680... and yet it just didn't sound like it was in D... and I KNOW that sonata.. I've played it on violin... I've played it on piano... I have "perfect pitch" in the sense that I know what a note is when I hear it, although I may not be able to tell you if it's EXACTLY A440 or A441, depending upon the day, humidity, blah blah blah. This just sounded in the cracks to me, and I don't know why I haven't noticed it recently. Thought I was going nuts, so I checked it with a tuner. It was definitely in the "cracks".. not quite D, not quite Eb...
No strobe, so I grabbed a stopwatch and timed 33 1/3 revolutions.... 58.6 seconds the first time, 59.2 the second time by eyeball. Yep... she's running fast! Did the math (60/59=1.017, then 440*1.017=447.5), calibrated a tuner reference to A447, and yep... that's closer to what I was hearing, but sounded even higher than that.. maybe A450.
Regardless.. my turntable is definitely too fast. I found another thread here that mentioned getting a new belt to correct it, but I'm having a tough time following that logic. First, I bought this table new, and it's the original belt. I know.. REALLY old, and it takes a LONG time for this turntable to come up to speed or stop, as the belt is pretty stretched out, but if anything that should might make it slip and run slow. Wear on the drive pulley would reduce it's diameter... ALSO contributing to a slower speed.
What's going on?!? Is there any adjustment I can make that will get the table back to the correct speed? It's powered by a wall wart adapter; does line voltage influence motor speed?
Here's two pics, if they are of any use solving the riddle. The pic of the drive pulley with the belt has an arrow indicating what looks like a small ring of felt at the bottom of the pulley. I can't tell if that's what it is, or if it's crud. Does anyone know?
