thorens Tp16 tonearm not too shabby

I did a little test last night , been using a TD160/ tp16 arm in my computer room for years now . but got a new table for the living room so moved my old Sansui FR4060 in to replace the TD160 . I like the auto return and ease of cart swaps and it looks very cool . I did a little recording of a track , had the same track done on the Thorens also . same cart ,same pre etc . Loaded both into audacity and the Thorens had a lot better sound , much more stereo separation and overall depth , a much bigger sound . Both tables are belt drive and sprung so guess it must boil down to the arm . The TP16 has the quirky VTF adjustment and special headshell but it does deliver .

Actually the TP16 arm has 2 setscrews in the base that allow for VTA Adjustment, However you then need to adjust the arm lift via the setscrew in the side of the lift arm. I always adjusted my TP16's this way rather than trust the mounting jig. This allows for fine tuning of the VTA.

I like my 160. I don't have much to compare it against, but it hasn't dissapointed me. I know there is better, and inevitably someone will come along and say that turntable Q or tonearm J is vastly superior, but the Thorens is no slouch. For the prices you can get one for, you could certainly do a lot worse.
 
Hi John,
I too was very positively surprised by the capabilities of the TD160/TP16 combo.
It really sang with my Shure V15 VST V and out of interest I popped on a LOMC AT0C9 ML II - not bad at all. Very capable indeed.

I am not surprised the TD-160 bested the Sansui. It's the belt-driven, suspended sub-chassis design that is the key difference, in my opinion. MY guess is even the "lowly" AR XA would best the Sansui.

Yes my AR is still in project mode :D Plan was to sell the TD160 and work on the AR . But now am back to square one , can't bear to part with the Sansui so it will have to go into storage I guess and the Thorens will go back into the computer room system . I was scoping out the parts upgrades on a certain AR site this weekend actually :scratch2:
