Thoughts on Eico hf-85

Hi guys, I’m getting a Eico hf 85 tube pre-amp. I was wondering what your thoughts are on it. My brother says they sound really well. I’ve seen the Eico and it’s not the prettiest thing but if it sounds well than that’s what matters. It’s been recapped so I should be good. It actually has the Eico Mullard tubes in it and in great shape. Bonus!

Great bang for the bucks !

I have seen some repainted beauties. There were nice looking wooden cabs available from the factory, too.

There is mucho info in the Eico threads, as well. The HF-81 has the same phono stage, so check those posts also. Their Phono stage is actually very accurate, if all is well....Enjoy the music...

Remember that the volume and tone controls are concentric and clutched. If you pull the smaller/inner knobs carefully, you will then be able to adjust each channel independently. This is important, as the Volume control is especially twitchy and deserves tweaking often, in order to balance the channels. In locked-in stereo mode, their volume control does not track well through it's rotation. This can be a nuisance, but I resist replacing mine for a few reasons...
