. . . thoughts on Irene . . .

. . . just a message of unity, support, prayer, hope, luck and plain good karma to those members, myself included, who are as of this moment, in line for a dance with Irene . . . I am some 25 miles north of the top NYC, in the Hudson Valley, and I recall all too well the destruction, damage and loss of life caused by Floyd in '99 . . . I have not been thru a direct hurricane hit, but if all the models hold, I soon will be . . .

. . . I am at this moment preparing for the worst; all my gear is being moved upstairs from the dungeon . . . well, MOST of it anyway, just not enuff room; some will be lost I fear! :tears:. . .

. . . please remember that things like stereos and such, no matter how precious, rare, dear, exotic, desirable, sexy, powerful, sublime, massive, transparent, etc., are only things and therefore can be replaced or at least a close substitute can be found . . . YOU, on the other hand, cannot . . . beside, I dont have that long for nature to get all the chemistry right again to produce the kind of folks who populate this site . . . seems near impossible . . .

. . . so, if you hafta, get thee to higher ground . . . if you're told, get thee evacuated . . . and if I gotta, you can share some of my stuff . . . 'cept the Pioneer, Marantz and Infinity . . . hey, gotta draw the line somehwere right !?!?! :D . . .

Batten down the Hatches and board up the windows. Hopefully it won`t be as bad as they predict!

I'm worried about my mother in North Philadelphia because she's got giant tree's looming over her house :(

still too early to call north of the border, they're calling for lots of rain on sunday, hopefully that's all we get...we took a direct hit from Juan a few years back, and it wasn't pretty.hurricanes usually track slightly north of here,or go due east out to sea missing us completely.this one seems aimed for the northern overland route,so could cause some problems

As a resident of coastal SC and NC for many years, I have dealt with quite a few hurricanes. I remember when hurricane David came through Wilmington NC in 1979. The wind and rain blew so hard that I had to keep towels around all the windows on the SE side of my Garage Apartment, and wring them out ever 15 minutes!

I worked for the Power Utility at the time. I had the actual day off that the storm hit, but the week after was heck! Even though I was in Engineering, I was assigned to Materials and Warehousing and spent the next week driving a big truck picking up and delivering materials to the line crews. Thank goodness I was a lot younger then.

I'm about 100 north of NYC and instinct told me to prepare for this one. Fueling up the cars, LP tanks, tunned up my modest Coleman generator, cord and lights checked, nice car shimmed into the garage, two inverters installed in the wagon, food, need to get water yet... can't forget that one. No cell but better some CB's and FRS radios, one Superadio, other all band receivers. I'm on a state route so if the power goes out I don't anticipate it to be for long. I'm manly concerned about the tall trees around the house. I'll just have to hold tight and deal with whatever happens. I hope everyone closer to the coast fairs well through it.

The decks are cleared, the hatches locked down and the pantry is stocked with enough canned goods to keep the house from blowing away. Hopefully down here in Va. Beach we will just get rained on but it is not looking good.

I was in Camille (1969 Gulf Coast)...it sucked a section, between the expansion strips, of I-10 out of the ground :yikes:. Here is a NASA picture of Irene...

Batten the hatches folks, here she comes!

Don't forget to share your disaster plans with your neighbors, friends, and family. Emergency services could become overloaded in some areas and you wouldn't want those resources wasted on searching for you if you're indeed safe and sound somewhere else.

Do your communicating now while it all still works.

I've been through a bunch of these lousy storms, and extend my thoughts and prayers to anyone in the path of this thing. Looks like this one's shaping up to be a real monster. One note from someone who knows first hand, if you are in the path of Irene, and get an evacuation notice, heed it. Riding out a hurricane is far less romantic and adventurous than it sounds... Mostly it's just terrifying.

Yep, don't mess with Mother Nature! :nono:

I have a very dear friend living in Centreport - Long Island. She´s a bit weary...
She and all of you are in irene´s path are in my prayers.

I just finished setting up the radio station to run off a single extension cord.:smoke:
Ain't the first time.:thmbsp: Annapolis will be under water.

I've got relatives on the lower end of the Hudson Valley and friends in NC, about 20 miles off the coast... mostly they just sound scared, and I don't blame them one bit! My cousins in Tom's River, NJ, are driving up to my Uncle's place in Seneca Falls, NY.

Hang in there friends, we'll be watching and praying for you!

I hope all will be well with others in the path. I, for one, am an extreme weather junkie and am looking forward to its arrival (though will likely be blunted a bit in the NE Baltimore area). I just enjoyed and was fascinated by the two quake waves as they passed through here a few days ago; my first earth-moving event in my 50 yrs experience.

Best,
Tyler

This thing is barreling right toward me :( We put everything from the patio into the garage, filled up the propane tank for the grill, got extra groceries and bottled water, broke out the crank flashlights, and moved the car away from the path of the three tall trees in my yard. My computer backup supply will run a CFL and the police scanner for a few hours at least. My area hasn't had anything like this since Hurricane Diane in 1955.

Not to worry, ovenmaster - by the time it gets to you it'll probably be as big a disappointment as Gloria was in '85...

West coast weather reports are saying that it's crapping out already. For you easterners, I hope they're right.
