Thoughts on these custom speakers?

I'll be on the road as soon as I have a destination! I needed to share the eagerness with someone else as I play the waiting game haha.
 
I would ask if the seller built them and if so what is in them if not are they "HOT"
 
Gah! Ok, I swear, I'll be at an ATM and the dudes house as soon as I hear from him. I seriously hope he still has them.
 
I would question "custom" and Solid wood, they look like home theater to me, could be white van no names.
 
Yeah, I forgot to ask in my email if he had built them himself but I've since been wondering. I asked him for specs/info on the components.

Well like I said White Van speakers are imported no name speaker made to look flashy. A good speaker would have some kind of name or label on it to ID it.

Most people that build custom speaker would not use solid wood as it's not the best for sound quality. Most people don't know their ass from a hole in the ground when IDing solid wood, veneer, or photograph paper.

Most people don't custom build home theater speaker sets.

Most people don't sell good speakers that are custom made, high quality solid wood for a $100.

A lot of people sell crap at a very low price to get people to not think before buying.

But if you go listen to them and like them all the above doesn't matter.
 
Nice, I’m in Salem so I’ll see if I can beat you to it. I could be totally wrong, but I too feel as though they have a white van vibe to them. I’ve never seen a yellow coned woofer with copper phase plug. Almost looks like they’re trying to look like a B&W woofer. Now if the cabinets seem stout then theyd be worth the $100 and you could build something very nice with them.

My thoughts:

I don't think they're white van. I don't think I've ever seen a WV speaker with a dome midrange.
Note that the grain on the top, front and sides doesn't line up. Typically with vinyl veneer they'd cut kerfs on one large board and then just fold it around like a cardboard box. Also, the grain on the top of the right hand small speaker seems to be a continuation of the side grain of the speaker to the left of it.
Lastly, note that the smaller speakers have different tweeters from the towers.
 
Let us know what happens.
Hard to pass those up for that price. Hope they aren't total crap that you can pick up with your pinky!

I have a bit of fine woodworking experience so I noticed a lot of that. The bookmatched pieces on the front of the cabinets is interesting on the tall right piece. It's not centered and I'm not sure why. Either there were knots, or there was some sapwood that they wanted to get rid of and had to offset the bookmatch. I guess there could be other reasons. Hopefully I'm able to at least demo them and can get more info.

I don't have much experience with hifi so it's not like I can really discern the quality, but $100 doesn't seem like much of a gamble, so I think it'll be ok as long as everything checks out.
 
something about the drivers themselves seems not to be WV. you won't really know until you pull out a woofer. of course you'll have to buy them first.:biggrin:
