OK... So this morning I stopped at a local thrift shop.. won't name.. but its huge. Seems some "named thrifts" have gone supermarket:yes:.

However, I came across the electronics aisle and gandered to see what I would see. There in the middle shelf, just next to a compact mini component stereo was an Aiwa Cassette Deck, model number RD40.

I looked once, twice, and then went to pick it up thinking, this must be some type of "muck up" (old school term for hustle)... "another term for scam".

But there it is, an Aiwa RD40, HD Pro deck for $4.95... ? WT ... :thmbsp:?

So... now its in my garage, awaiting a facial cleaning and field test.

Results to follow, tomorrow, when I finish putting it through "the :D...... test"!

Have you found something "incredulous" during your thrift shopping lately..that actually did work?

Are you sure of the model number? I'm not familiar with any Aiwa decks beginning with RD. Either way enjoy!
 
You just never know what will turn up and for how much. I've an Onkyo TX-4500 MkII in the kitchen system that was $6 at a thrift, a Technics SL-D2 turntable for the same price. Then they have some piece of junk for ten times the price. Just about like the lottery sometimes it seems.

Yes... you are correct... correcting me, its a model AD-R40.

Anyways.... I did plug the unit in this morning and ..... buzz...hummm... silence.. ?

So, at which point I reached for the oldest cassette I have.. and as "fate" would have it :sigh:: Color Me Badd, 1991 Giant Records.
I knew at this point, things were not going to go well:no:.

Put the tape in..... nuttin.... nuts... no ops from the motor, led display or the like:no:.

Oh well.. now I know why its priced so low...to go.

I suppose I could pursue the old internal works look over... But I won't.

That's my "thrift shop" experience..I hope and trust others experience better.
 
A few weeks ago I found a Luxman R-115 for about $25 at Savers....it has a few issues but generally works. The same place would put an $80 on any silver receiver no matter what brand or condition. So it never hurts to see what they missed while looking up prices on Ebay.

What bothers me is that one usually can get a refund on Ebay...most thrifts are stopping returns for cash.

As well they should; it's a charity folks....

The Salvation Army price stickers here clearly state sold "As Is". If you can't afford to take the risk, leave it on the shelf.

As far as I'm concerned, they shouldn't give ANY refunds at all.
