Tinnitus and Hearing Aids

Pretty much the same thing happened to me, 25+ yrs ago. Mine was caused (or at least greatly exacerbated) by berthing directly below the #2 arresting cable, on a carrier. At some point, I may try again.

What squadron? I was directly below the JBD’s. VA-34

I really can't remember. I did observe flight ops from time to time, but in no way was involved with them (other than maintaining the CCTV system to the ready rooms, etc.).
USS Connie, CV-64-1978-1980.

I've heard (no pun intended) that there are 'audiophile' hearing aides. Anybody know about these?
I've searched and there are none that I am aware of. The Widex brand has a model that a number of high profile musicians use as it has low latency and good programs for "live music" situations. Now that the BIG hearing aid company (Sonova) bought Sennheiser, maybe we'll see some "audiophile" hearing aids developed. I've seen some ads recently for some SONY hearing aids also - Sony could develop a high-end hearing aid - I would think.

I am interested in the tinnitus hearing aid thing too as mine is quite loud. Over Thanksgiving I had occasion to talk to a retired ENT and he said the aids that mask, or counter tinnitus really don't work well. I'd like to hear from any of you if the noise canceling ones work or not in practical experience. I thought I saw Bose getting into this too.

I don’t know of any that are supposed to be noise canceling except on certain programs that are like radios that squelch extraneous noise in crowded situations. Mine has not worked very well in those situations.

Right now, in my living room, with the tv off and no conversation, I hear nothing.

interesting. I had tinnitus after 2 years of service in an 8" howitzer battery. When I filed a claim for hearing loss upon discharge, they pretty much told me to pound sand, but that was 33 years ago.

Try again. A buddy filed several times and was turned down. He won the last time and the VA paid him all the back money (7(?) years' worth) since he first applied.

My audiologist said there are ear pieces that can be 'programmed' to 'tune out' the audio tune you hear with tinnitus in your head. He said that.

Haven't gone to the VA to check it out yet. I've just accepted tinnitus and suffer with it -- but I will be going to the VA in a month or so - he said it, it must be true, he would know, and said it was free.

This noise is driving me nuts. It's like the older you get... the louder it gets, or the more you notice it. But it's getting louder now.

As I noted earlier in this thread, I was lucky to have a nearby PhD in audiology that specialized in tinnitus and geriatric hearing problems. She was great but frank in choosing hearing aids and discussing tinnitus as a problem without a medical solution. Knowing I was a veteran she did extoll the expertise of the VA folks. No one has more experience than the VA with tinnitus for obvious reasons

So don’t hesitate to avail yourself of their services, plus it’s a lot cheaper!
