Tips for Renaissance 80s needed

Hi all,

In an absurd turn of luck I acquired a pair of Infiniry Renaissance 80s this morning!

I have been extremely happy with my NHT Classic Threes, and felt no need to upgraded, but you don’t pass up an opportunity for a pair of rare Infinities if you know what’s good for you!

At any rate, I’ve got them very haphazardly setup, in front of my NHTs and before I go to the trouble of re-jiggerijg my whole setup I thought I’d ask you lovey folks some questions:

1) the foam around the rear port is pretty degraded. As far as I can tell this isn’t particularly effecting the sound and it doesn’t seem terribly dangerous. Bother with trying to repair it?

2) currently powered by an Onkyo M-504 and they seem like they’re not wanting. I have a pair of NAD 2400s I can hook up for some absurd power. Worth it?

3) Bass management is my biggest thing. I use a Marantz 6012 as a pre amp, and I can’t seem to work out the cross over. I have two 300w Infinity Sub R12s which worked like magic with my NHTs, but the NHTs convincingly go down to 25-30Hz with their 10” side firing woofers. The Renaissance 80a are clearly not meant for that, but my normal fiddling is not making it work.

I’ve only been listening to them for a few hours, so I can’t draw amy real conclusions yet, but it is obvious they’re incredible. They seem to really prefer certain music, which isn’t the case with the NHTs...

Well, I gotta say I think these are top 3 speakers I’ve ever heard. The bass / mid bass isn’t as good as the Classic Fours, but the imaging, detail, and high end is essentially without fault. If I can figure out how to integrate the subs I think they’d be pretty close to perfect.
 
yeah, imaging is absolutely amazing on both the 90s and the 80s.

The better your audio reproduction chain, the better they're going to sound, so I say go for it with the amps.

the lack of bass was surprising to me too at first, but you'll adjust, especially with good subs.

Good luck integrating the subs, it can be done, just takes a lot of time, and music you're intimately familiar with.
 
Enjoy, I'm loving my 90's which I bought from a friend for $50. 20 minuets after he garbage picked them.

Yeah, some guy was throwing stuff out, my buddy saw some other equipment and asked if he had anything else, the guy said "I've got some old speakers that are kind of heavy, they're all yours if you want to carry them out of my basement."

I traded $50.00 and an Magnavox Tube amp (with an intermittent hum I couldn't get rid of) and they were all mine.

I've got them running in my computer room, hooked up to my Marantz SR7500 via toslink from the computer. I had them in my main system bi-amped with two Crown PS-400 and two PS-200 but didn't like the abuse they were getting.

They have settled in nicely in their current application, I get to listen to them everyday while working on the computer. I may bi-amp them out of the Marantz but then I'd loose the direct digital connection, which I've gotten used to at this point.
