I’m conflicted. On the one hand this console is unique in that the speakers tuck away inside the console when not in use, the Garrard rc88/4 is in good shape, just needs a little work, and the amp sounds amazing. On the other hand the wood isn’t in the best shape, it’s huge and heavy, can’t fit another console inside the house, and I doubt I’d ever play anything besides the occasional Jazz 78 on it.

The speakers can be removed as is because they come in their own cabinet, I’d just have to unhinge them an voila! The amp is working and would probably only need a power supply rebuild and some mods to get it playing as a standalone unit.

The speakers, by the way, are Oval EMI’s and EV tweeters.

What to do, what to do....?3F66B147-A1F3-477B-8908-8784F8EE8EBD.jpeg7523EB38-F983-4F1C-A212-95020EF61DB7.jpeg437E5C38-E56E-4758-A52F-506C53DF3D30.jpeg5E996A53-7F58-4F05-8A05-31957D67AC1A.jpeg720290FE-C275-4B11-A5B7-0AD6F6B61E60.png

I think that there is another option. Pass it on to someone who wants to keep it as is and use the funds towards a different system.

But we can't save everything we find.

After listening to the EMI’s I just can’t bring myself to part with them. Feel the same way about the amp.

In the end all we can offer is opinions, suggestions etc; It's your home so do what's best for you.

You could always pull the amp & speakers and donate the cabinetry. Over the past several years there has been an uptick of people re-purposing old consoles (TV stand, storage unit, etc) for the aesthetic appeal

Pull the amp and replace it with a SS unit, add bluetooth, refurb the TT and sell the whole thing to a MCM dealer.

Keep the parts you want and give away the rest. I doubt that you’d be able to get much for old brown furniture that needs refinishing. People are giving that kind of stuff away where I live.

That’s a pretty cool console.

If you like the way it sounds and have the space for it, I’d keep it.

I’d definitely replace the turntable, it obviously isn’t for playing LPs, and will never be. There should be no guilt or remorse for decommissioning an out-of-date turntable.

Regarding the wood, if you have the time and ability, I’d refinish it, or if you have the funds, have somebody do it for you. I’d replace the four doors with plain panel or shaker style doors, and replace the hardware with something more contemporary. Actually, the doors must be dummies, so maybe replace them with panels

I would also cut the curves out of the base skirt, or replace it, and maybe add legs

Depending on the new stain, maybe change the grill fabric as well.

A project for sure, but one I’d consider worthwhile
