To the Mods: Is there a way that we can limit the amount of guests that are logged on at a given time? I have had a tough time getting on today because the server was to busy. At one time there were 67 guests and 29 members. Just curious and frustrated that I was not able to get my AK fix today. :thumbsdn:

Virtually all members started out as guests/lurkers.

Let's extend to them the hand of friendship, not the back of our hands.

Weird. The only time I have ever had a tough time getting here was when there were server problems a few weeks back. Other than that I've had smooth sailing. The only glitch I have is seeing an avatar on the opening page that I'd deleted weeks ago!

I second that thought. It would be wrong to be an exclusive club. I joined after a few weeks of visiting.

No site is perfect; occasionally there will be times when access is denied. Other than the server outage a while ago (when I went through serious AK withdrawl symptoms) I have never been denied access.

Wow , I have to admit I logged in as a guest for over a YEAR before
finally taking time to register-and-avatar myself.Did feel at home
as a guest too..well now that's a big quality in itself says I

Maybe my post was misunderstood, I don't think that I said ban guests, just limit them when member counts are high. Just now that I logged in , there are 70 guests and 5 members. It is not a problem now but suppose you had limited time to get on AK (work, which was my case yesterday) and the server was busy. I agree that this community will not and should not turn it's back on anyone but when the server is being pushed to limits why can't the membership have priority to the sight? Patrick

Like a lot of other forums, you can configure it where guests can see the forum topics, and view thread topics, but not the threads themselves.

As far as I can tell, at any given time, guests are leeching the site and using as much, if not more bandwidth than members.

Kam, what takes more resources, having extra members that join to read the threads, or visitors who read the threads? Seeing as the server must monitor and kkep track of each member and lumps visitors together, I would think allowing visitors might actually be less stress on the server.

My 2¢: by limiting guests to topics only, you are less likely to get new members. Had I not been allowed to browse, I would not have joined.

It's about equal. While the "view new posts" feature catalogs the new posts since you were last signed in and can take you to the very post you last read, the "view today's threads" when not logged in does roughly the same. The only reason we'd limit guests is if we were getting taxed hard enough and had no other choice to keep the boat afloat until another server switchover.
