-- Will FriedwaldIn November 1955, Southern headlined at Birdland, and one of the accompanying acts was the recently revitalized founder of the cool, Miles Davis himself, then introducing his quintet with John Coltrane. Within a few months, the Davis-Coltrane fivesome would be one of the most important bands in American music, but at the time of that gig, Southern was the big news. When Nat Hentoff reviewed the bill ... for Down Beat, most of his column inches went to Southern; he noted that this was her first Birdland appearance in six years, ... comparing the event to a "warm sunny day in the dead of winter." Contrastingly, Hentoff's praise for Davis was mainly limited to how the trumpeter's group "made for a generally effective complementary billing with Jeri."

Intriguing title.
How is 'Avant Gershwin'?
--Eugene Holley, Jr.Backed by a young and hungry rhythm section featuring drummer Greg Hutchinson, bassist Reuben Rogers, and pianist Peter Martin, Reeves finds herself in a straight-ahead setting where she can show off her jazz chops without compromising to pop-oriented concepts and expectations. The result is a recording of unadulterated and honest jazz in the classic sense. Her skillful blending of the best of Sarah Vaughan and Betty Carter is evident on Richard Rodger's "Loads of Love." The Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo adds Joe Pass strains to Cole Porter's "I Concentrate on You," while trumpeter Nichlolas Payton lend his mellow tones to Reeve's heartfelt rendition of "You Go to My Head."
