Benny Golson ~ Terminal 1

Damn good album I thought. It has a really nice swing. There's an excellent version of Golson's very popular standard Killer Joe that he and Art Farmer first performed with their Jazztet group back in 1960.

All in all a very fine album.

Tonights' playlist:

Jimmy Smith/Blue Note
"Live at the chicken shack" and "Home cookin" 2 great LPs.
Pass me another Gin and tonic.....

I agree very much. I always loved his tenor sound. Did you see the movie TheTerminal? Benny plays himself as part of the sub plot. A must-see for Golson fans. :thmbsp:

I don't believe so. Is that the movie where Tom Hanks plays a foreigner stuck in an airport terminal?

On today's plate....

Benny Golson - Terminal 1
Sonny Rollins - Newk's Time
Dizzy Gillespie w/Sonny Rollins and Sonny Stitt - Duets (companion piece to Sonny Side Up)

Yes, that's the one. Hanks is a foreigner stuck at JFK New York for a very difficult reason. Can't give away the story, but if you love Golson and jazz in general you need to see this flick.

Today...

Melvin Rhyne~Boss Organ
Greg Osby~Banned in New York

I'm doing a little salute to Miles Davis, that is, to his music of the late 60's and early 70's. Yep, his electric period. The birth of jazz fusion.

I can see the grimaces already.

Loved by some and loathed by many (jazz purists of the day hated this with a passion). Without further adieu, I give you the some of the artists who played with Miles during that period and the music they created afterwards.

Wayne Shorter Quartet - Beyond The Sound Barrier
Billy Cobham - Crosswinds
Weather Report - I Sing The Body Electric (Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul)
Return To Forever - Romantic Warrior (Chick Corea)
Mahivishnu ORchestra - Birds Of Fire (John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham)

Coleman Hawkins/Pee Wee Russell, "In Session in Swingville" on 2-LP mono pressing, 1961. Great sax and clarinet work.
