Driving past my local refuse site on my way to have fish and chips by the water with the other half, I asked "Do you mind if we have a look for any electronic stuff I can tinker with on the way back?"
"Ok sure."
So on the way back we pop in and I'm asked "What are you disposing of today?" to which I reply "Er nothing, I just wanted to have a look and see if I can find any electronic stuff I can fix or take for parts."
"You can't do that, it's not allowed" was the reply. Somewhat surprised I asked why, I only want to take a look around.
He asks his co-worker who says it's against the rules? but then lets me though ok'ing me to look around.
So I go up to the recycling centre and stop where I'm approached by a couple of guys asking "what are you dropping off?"
I again tell my story with a similar response although he was softening, so I tell him I hate to see stuff thrown out that could maybe be fixed or parts taken off it, and I'm learning electronics. He says "well there is a Marantz in the skip over there, not real old, here, come over, I'll show you."
He leads me to the massive bin, leans over the side and struggles to pull the amp out. "No power cord though" he says.
"Can I have it?" I ask.
With a friendly wink he says "Hmm well I suppose you can."
I thank him very much and start to drive to the exit. He rides a bike to the exit also (I have to put my car on the weigh bridge) and jumps in the booth with the first guys who let me in for free (as I wasn't dumping waste, taking it away lol).
I pull up at the window and again thank the guys very very much for allowing me to come and take a look. They smile and say "No worries" as I pull away
I get home, plug it into my dim bulb tester and switch it on. The bulb flashes on/off 4 times along with the amp clicking as it powers on/off then finally settles down with the bulb nice and dim.
I attach some speakers and find it works perfectly
I can only imagine the amp must have somehow gone into protect mode with the other owner so they just binned it. When I plugged it back in again, the dim bulb tester took the surges so the amp sellted down and decided everything was ok again.
Sweet!
I now have a pretty mint Marantz SR 5600 to play with.
No remote however I've ordered a replacement that will work off Ebay for $10.
