American roots music. The good old USA can (mostly) lay claim to the blues and country music, as well as all the off-shoots. Like Muddy Waters said, the blues had a baby and they named it rock and roll. So this thread can include blues, country, swing, rock, folk, rockabilly, surf, garage, zydeco, even punk......What else? Only requirement is it should, in your opinion, borrow from the original American music genre or be original American music.

Remember, the Stones STARTED OUT as a "roots" band, as did the Beatles, Led Zepplin, The Who and the list goes on. (all bands from across the pond). Many 60's rock bands' first recording borrowed from one form or another of Rhythm and Blues or Country.

Thanks Stuwee, I was wondering if I was the only one here who digs roots music. Jerry Lee is great, unless you were one of his wives. (Ouch!)

I pulled an old Eddie Cochran cassette out to play in the car today, don't know where I got it or what the name of it is, probably a hits compilation.

Lightning Hopkins "Texas Bluesman" (Arhoolie Records)
Buddy Guy "Chess Masters" (Chess Records)
Pandoras "Stop Pretending" (Rhino Records)

The Pandoras are an all girl group, which usually mean a novelty act, but they rock! Catchy Garage -influenced pop with a punk-ish attitude.
 
Kudo's hopefully more will add to this, you've given me 4 I've never heard of before! Pandora's sound like they're great for a spin:yes: Got lucky and got the Atlantic Rhythm and Blues box set 14 LP's for $20 unopened! Highly recomended!!! Way to much to list!

Yes, lucky you are. That's quite a "gift".
The first 4 bands I mentioned all have ties to the DC area, whee I was lucky enough to grow up. Got to see them all live so I was hooked, naturaully. I think most people love roots music, but the orgins don't mean as much as the music does. Hopefully some more people will get on board. I noticed on the thread from similost "They all died" how much aclaim Buddy Holly got. I don't have any of his original records but still dig him.
Jimi Hendrix is on PBS as I type, chewing gum, playing "Like a Rolling Stone" from Live At Monterey. Beautiful.
 
K, I need some help on this one,Aretha Frankin 3 CD set singing at her father's church in Detroit, Mahailya Jackson(sp) like performance! Scat/chant/hummin' with the choir to open Amazing Grace like nobody's b'ness. anyone know the title? The kids at the store just shake their heads:thumbsdn:

A solid record from start to finish. If you like rockin' roots, check it out and if you already have it break it out for another spin. You will be a "Happy Boy" (last track)
 
I love the Blasters...check out the Gene Taylor blues band live on you tube. Its the blasters without big bro Phil on vocals....sweeeet... in other news - sad day-...R. I. P -Chris Gaffney-He passed away yesterday...

You know what I'm looking for that one too. I used to have it and somehow don't now and don't remember what it's called.
 
Check out the roots rock radio podcast at http://rrradio.com

Modern roots music, mostly rock influence stuff, blues, a little rockabilly and some twang. All good stuff. Richard Taylor is the podcaster and I really like his style.

Looks and sounds like maybe it was played only once or twice

I just went back to verify something and noticed the album cover sticking up a bit, held it open, shook it and a 22 long rifle shell fell out(how it never damaged either album or cover is beyond me, Guess that answer is blowin' in the wind)

With the banjo maybe it should be in the Twang playlist
