Todays Speakers vs Vintage Speakers

Speakers, like headphones, can be built and tuned to their market audience. Think Beats headphones.

Interesting reading. I went through all 43 pages, while I was listening to my 40 years old well tuned Philips 22RH532 MFB, placed on high-gloss - finished milk stools under the usage of several (a lot!) 3M bumpons. All the time I was wondering whether I put my money into a new motorcycle or a pair of JBL 4312G, L100 Classic or Klipsch Heresy IV. Or better refoam and recap my Pioneer S-1010. I simply don´t know. Why? Because I love the way the Philips (and their younger and smaller sisters 22 AH858 MFB) reproduce music in my room. Even the stereo stage works. I know modern speakers can sound extremely convincing. But so can old ones. My music? Everything between AC/DC and Edie Brickell, touching things like Yes, (old) Genesis, If, and all musicians who play my beloved tonewheel - Hammond. And the Philips can do that convincing and without giving me the feeling of fatigue.

I think I will begin with the Pioneers. The berillium ribbon is just too nice.

The LS3/5A came out in 1975 and I think that qualifies it as "vintage." The 13th version of this speaker was just released (see the current Audiophile Magazine) and every subsequent version after the first has tried to recapture the magic of the first.

When I take my original Chartwell LS3/5As to AudioKarma gatherings, everyone's jaws just drop with astonishment at what they hear.

This is the answer to all responses in this thread....LOL...just joking:)

However, i also use chartwell ls35as as my daily driver...while it may not be as accurate as new models, there is something so right about their presentation that i have yet to have something replace them.....

Now if you are using a low powered triode, that is another story....
