Well got this movie,this a dam good ww2 north Atlantic uboat convoy movie.got the DVD not blueray
Still looks and sounds great,must say one of the best ww2 navy movies I have seen.tom hanks did a great job as the captain of the ship.

I had no idea this existed. Havent kept up on new films since covid hit.
Hasnt been much to keep up on LOL.

I often worry about a great war film thats rated less than R. But it can be done.

When I went to the IMDB page and saw, based on the novel The Good Shepard
I thought, wait the De Niro film??? No connection.

Yeah I saw that on the IMDB page. Seems Sony backed it.
Had a $50m budget so not cheap but not super big. Whats crazy
is Saving Private Ryan had a $70m budget. Granted that was
20+ years ago. Allot can be done with a reasonable budget.

No Apple TV here but I can watch it.

Do you know if it got any theater play time?

Not sure if it hit any big screens.

I enjoyed it. Being a tin can sailor they did ok with the North Atlantic rough seas. The sub hunting stuff was fairly good, nothing I noticed was to crazy like in Hunt for Red October :D

Sounds like overall everyone liked it quite a bit.

Was happy to see all the Das Boot plugs. That is still my fav war at sea so to
speak film. Sounds like this one is up there in the eyes of some.

I get what someone said about Hanks comments on the Apple distribution. Im not
in the videophile camp or anything. Just the end product with streaming services can
be very hit and miss. Also depending on the sustained internet bandwidth the applied
compression can be more noticeable at times. Never mind how if its being transcoded
within the home it can become more butchered.

When I can I prefer getting a complete download thats solid. No issues.

And yeah Tom is a talented actor. But I agree there are others. Reminded me of how
Scorsese became so into Leo for his films. Never saw that coming. But overall he does
a quality performance.
 
I am not a video snob so I am not much help in that area. To use a audio analogy I am good with a AM transistor radio at home.
 
I can only speak for myself. But its easier for me to deal with smeared audio
or say 128kbs music files. If the content is enjoyable I can get past it.

But man when something in the video realm is upsampled badly, they botch the
aspect ratio, compression gets out of hand and it looks like the color palette dropped
in scale, chops / stutters. Or the absolute worst, the audio and video go out of sync.

Not trying to say all streaming services suffer from this. But it happens. And I often get
really into watching shows or movies. I hate having something screw up in the middle of it.

I will openly call myself a videophile when it comes to HD tv settings and the various forms
of "motion smoothing". It can go by different names depending on the brand of the TV but
the effects are the same for me, its UNBEARABLE!!! In a nut shell, to me it makes the image
displayed look like an early 70s effort at cheap video recording. Horribly unnatural and painful
to watch. Im sure some here have been to a friends house who has it turned on in their TV and
your there wanting to say something but dont want to be rude. Its so crazy to me some dont seem
to even notice or mind it.

Well thats it for my snob rant LOL.
 
Hollywood took a few liberties in this one that kinda took me out if the movie in a couple spots. Mostly due to the questionable actions of the U-boats.
 
Great movie, but may have to watch it a second time, due the the naval vocab and rapid changing camera shots.

Amazed at the degree of sonar dev that was available at the time!:eek:

I thought that movie was OK and far better than I expected. I liked when Admiral King, a first rate son of a bitch as well as a first rate commander of the Navy, told Nimitz that when things get tough they call on the sons of bitches. King's daughter said he was the most even tempered man she ever knew--always in a rage.
