Tone Knob on Marantz 2275

Can anyone explain the tone knob on the Marantz 2275? I figure "out" means the tone controls are taken out of the signal path. In means they are back in the signal path. What differences are the different frequencies supposed to make? I've listened to them but the differences must be very subtle. Sometimes I think I can hear a difference but it may be just my imagination.
Usually I have the knob pointing straight up at 250 Hz. But for some records I like it off. Since I always run my tone controls flat I don't know if it really makes a difference.

Yes they are subtle. The frequencies are called turnover or crossover frequencies, the frequency limit the tone controls vary.

Read the manual; maybe it explains it better. If the tone controls are set in the center, the switch makes no difference. Try turning a tone control to one limit and then try the different frequencies.

my 2265 has the same setup. IIRC the normal tone controls, the slope roll off for the bass boost region is ~250-500hz. swtiching it to 100hz, the slope roll off is ~100hz (so you aren't boosting up as high in the frequency range with the bass level). the 10k setting does the same thing, IIRC, the normal treble tone control roll on is in the 5000-7000 hz range, so, with the 10k settings, you're not boosting up as low in the frequency range with the normal setting.

flat

michiganpat has it.

If you have the actual bass, mid and treble controls on flat, you will have a hard time hearing it. I tend to run my tone controls at about +2 from flat and then you can hear a little effect when switching the tone control.

Source and speakers will have a lot of effect on how much effect you hear.
