Tony Levin's Stick Men / Adrian Belew Power Trio Tour!!

They changed venue here last week and are playing at a new club that just opened a few weeks ago with a 400-500 capacity which should be great. The sound suppose to be excellent with a nice restaurant & bar etc. Finally Phoenix has some clubs that can attract this type of act. Cheers!

The concert was awesome & one of the best I've been to. A very intimate small club setting with a nice bar and the prices were very reasonable for pints of stout or ale. We got there early and our seats were direct center to the stage 4th row with Belew right in front. It was loud no doubt, but the mix was good. Stickmen started the show with a 50 minute set. Tony was great as always and they did a killer version of Fripp's "Breathless" from his Exposure lp. The Belew Power Trio were very tight and played about 50 minutes also. After a 10 minute break Belew, Levin & Mastelotto started out the Crimson set with Three of a Perfect Pair & Breathless. One by one the other members joined including Tools' Danny Carey filling in for Belew's regular drummer. The drums on B'Boom were tremendous. Belew was loaded with energy, bending, shaking his Parker Fly & and constantly doing dive bombs with his whammy bar. He was very animated & his voice is still very good & easily hit the highs on Frame by Frame & One Time. The entire show ran 3 hours.

Here's a great review of the show that just came up on the AZ Republic with complete set lists

Here is a list of all the KC tunes.

Three of a Perfect Pair
Red
Indiscipline
Frame by Frame
Dinosaur
B' Boom
Thrak
One Time
V'room V'room
Thela Hun Jinjeet for the finale

Belew's Power Trio did a version of KC's Neurotica from the Beat lp.

After the show I was able to get my Lone Rhino lp signed by Adrian. He was very friendly as usual and was enjoying a pint of ale also.

Thanks for the great review & pics, Bob! I hesitated to go to our local show because they indicated that it would be a standing room only situation & this old dude couldn't deal with that. I need to find out about Julie Slick- One of my daughter's best friends last name is Slick- maybe they're related!

Awww man...that's awesome! I got introduced to Tony Levine when he played in Mike Portnoy's supergroup Liquid Tension Experiment 1 and 2 - fantastic playing!!!! The guy is a madman on that bass. I highly recommend LTE to ANYONE into proggy, rocky, improv type music. And who does'nt know Danny Carey! I don't think TOOL could ever really be TOOL without him. I wish I had seen them.

I met a lot of Tool fans at the show. They were blown away by Belew, Levin & Mastelotto. I'm sure their buying Crimson, Levin & Belew cd's as we speak. Carey was in awe the entire night playing with his idols. Some real power house drumming was going on between the two of them. LTE was awesome I heard that they could possibly get together again! Great show!

Glad it was such a great show you got to witness. I wish I could have gone to their stop in Chicago, but it wasn't to be. :tears:

Tool fans showing up for this show doesn't surprise me in the least. Tool has been on friendly terms with King Crimson for some years. Robert Fripp has openly admired them in his diary in the past. During the summer/fall of 2003 (IIRC), King Crimson actually went on tour with them for a brief period as the opening act. I believe it was at the Red Rocks show that Maynard opened Tool's set with the comment "Now you know who we've been stealing from all these years" (or words to that effect). At the last show of that short run, I believe Danny Carey sat in for Pat Mastelatto when KC played Red.

Danny Carey also contributed to Belew's Side One & Side Three Projects with Les Claypool. Mastelotto was a monster on the drums the other night and played with Stickmen, Belew's Group (since his regular drummer was out) & The Crim set. He was a busy guy to say the least. B'Boom was an all out drum war between them both.

I finally heard part of the Boulder show, now I'm really bummed I missed it. I'll wait for the Mrs. to leave before I crank it up the rest but Red and B'Boom were pretty good.

So nobody is going to see any of The Crimson ProjeKct Concerts? Unfortunately they aren't playing here. They are opening from Dream Theatre which I don't care much about, but they are doing some of their own shows in a few cities. I highly recommend this concert. I saw them last fall and they were great!
