I like to pull weeds.
Hey,
Last friday night I ordered the Cabinet Handbook, I think it was the '66 edition. I looked around online and Amazon had one for 23 bux delivered, it should be here any day now. I think I'll shoot for the earlier '62 version next. One of this might have that big enclosure with the open baffle treble units on top! I think the W15 CS version I have would be a perfect match for that cabinet. Thank you Gang-Twanger for the inspiration, it's appreciated!
Over the weekend I was able to drag out my creaky, old Dual 1229Q and hook it up to the Scott. I finally got the TT sounding good, but the Scott was a no show. The phono stage is very staticky, noisy, not too hummy though. The Equalization switch couldn't possibly be any noisier. I've already put Deoxit through it twice with no help whatsover. Doctorolds set me up with a link here that deals directly with this issue. I may do it myself, or if I can get the local tube tech back into communication, I'll get him to take a gander.
What I'm saying is that I was able to put the Super 12's onto solid state power. My Sansui QRX-6001 (new caps in phono and EQ sections, DC offset is balanced and other goodies) was handy, so I used that. It was damned fine and a great match. My oldest boy and I sat back and listened for a while, he was inspired with the sound. We were both impressed. I could actually get someone to buy these they sound so good. All that said, there's no fair comparison between tubes and solid state. The tubes give a breath of life that solid state just can't deliver. So, I'm going to be hell bent to get the Scott taken care of as soon as possible.
To back track a bit, when the Super 12's were on tubes, my son was so impressed he expressed great interest in not only getting a tube powered rig, but interest in the music I've been listening to. He spent the afternoon pouring through epay drooling over the Scott LK-72. Yes, he does have the freshly, completely rebuilt Sansui 9090. But that receiver does not do what tubes do, and he likes what tubes do. I like what tubes do.
