Tool covers on piano...exposing the beauty and genius

Even if you aren't a fan of the band, hearing their work presented in this format may provide some insight as to why they've received such widespread acclaim. If you are a fan of the band you'll likely gain an even greater respect for what brilliant song writers and crafters they are. This really reinforces my opinion that they're so far beyond their contemporaries it's laughable. This cat does a great job translating a few of their tunes to the ivories. Fact of the matter is, he really doesn't have to make any departures from their original form. The songs seem just as home on piano as they do with a four piece prog rock band. I'd say the piano really illustrates the haunting, dark beauty of their style. Anyway, the guy has plenty of cover material to explore from Tool....and other bands, alike. Here's a few...

EDIT: disregard these links. Working links three posts down.

Dead spot on comments, the ones in bold most of all. I'm going to dig into the links you provided right now.

p.s. - all the links say "this video does not exist". I was really looking forward to them, too.

I love every single one of them. They are very true to original form, unlike the much more abstract readings of Radiohead by Brad Mehldau. I'm probably the most surprised at how well Stinkfist translates to solo piano. As performed by Tool, it's as grinding and sinewy a rock song as I can imagine, and on piano it's nothing short of fascinating. Thanks for opening my eyes to this.

Wow! Thanks Jaz!

It almost seems a shame their entire body of work has largely been confined to their renditions of it. Now, don't take that the wrong way. What they do with their own songs is unmatched in execution and performance by any...by a long shot. But much of their material is so rich in dynamic and emotional complexity....to hear it conveyed with the intimacy of a single instrument is so powerful, so immense. I swear it's all I can do to keep from ballin'. I mean, I'd just love to hear their work performed by a string quartet or something of the like. It's easy to call it powerful with Danny Carey pushin' it along, but once you hear it stripped down you realize how profoundly powerful the songs really are. What a f*#kin' gift these guys have been to contemporary music. Extraordinary. Simply extraordinary.

You'll get no argument from me. I'm within a shout of being 60 years old, and I can pretty much count the rock ensembles that have absolutely knocked me off my feet and kept me there during that time on my thumbs. Tool is one of them.

Amen to that.

I have been a huge fan of Tool for well over a decade now and have always thought them as one of the most talented, powerful, and inspired groups to have graced us since the likes of Pink Floyd, Rush, The Doors and Dream Theater. The one sad thing is Manard J. phoned in all the vocal parts of the last album (10000 Days) and I could hear it in the music, if the album were all instrumental I feel I would have enjoyed it more. I was lucky enough to see both the Lateralus and 10,000 Days tours and I could hear and see a great schism in the band between the two. And yes I know I made a pun.

Thanks Tom I can't wait to check this out, although I think I heard some of them years ago.

+1

This is also very cool. As it happens, Lateralus is my favorite of theirs. If rock music gets any better, I don't even need to know.

+1 again! Actually it's hard for me to say it's my favorite over Undertow, but I find myself listening to Lateralus more than the others these days. "The Patient" is one of my favorite Tool songs, that's for sure.

I'm half your age, and Tool were the band that got me into music as a young teenager. I remember buying Undertow on cassette when it came out (after seeing the videos for "Prison Sex" and "Sober" on MTV, how could I not?!), and being totally blown away. And I still am to this day, whenever I play it. [I also remember my mom being very disturbed by the pictures in the Undertow inlay:)].
