So many bands, and so many memories! Well, here is my list of the 10 bands who reinvented America's music, or maybe I should say bands who took the music in a different direction. Gotta love the 70's!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Led Zeppelin
The Eagles
Steely Dan
Bob Marley & The Wailers
The Band
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
The Clash
Parliament Funkadelic
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Pink Floyd
It would be far beyond me to say where each of these great bands rank, but overall, what an impact!!!!

Well, let's not limit it to the 70s, since some of those bands started in the 60s.

Those are also good, but I would add:

THE BEATLES
CCR
ZAPPA
DYLAN
MARVIN GAYE
VAN MORRISON
BUDDY HOLLY

10 bands who reinvented America's music?

Led Zepplin, Bob Marley, The Clash and Pink Floyd are hardly American.

Man I love this place. TML was so far from my consciousness it's almost as if no memory existed. ... then seeing your post I did a quick search, found a stream of 'Roadrunner', and whoosh memory floods back. Ahhhh. :thmbsp:

I guess one could argue that Zeppelin took American music, re-arranged it, took credit for it, and profited from it. I guess that's kind of "re-inventing" American music.:D

I think the idea is that "America's music" is rock and/or roll.

Anyway, I think for the most part the bands in the OP were successful because they reinterpreted existing styles for new audiences. Nothing wrong with that, and I guess in a way it is "reinventing music". I do like some of the bands above, but I don't think any were revolutionary.

BTO was/is a Canadian band. I guess if you mean a North American band it would be ok. I second Grand Funk, they brought in motown beats to rock and roll and pretty much saved hard rock through the early disco era.

Although recorded in '69, Bitches Brew was released in '70 and brought Fusion to the scene. Keep in mind that most jazz players were dead set against most any popular music aside from jazz. The fusion concept was revolutionary and inspired a ton of great bands and artists.

AC/DC goes without saying.

Iggy and the Stooges
Talking Heads
ZZ Top
Steve Reich/Philip Glass
Velvet Underground
The Germs
X
Wall of Vodoo
Herbie Hankock
Zappa in no particular order.

DEVO! There was absolutley nothing like Devo. I wasn't too sure if I even liked them at first but like habaneros they grew on me.

:music: a class by themselves

NY Dolls haven't been mentioned, Ramones spawned a thousand bands all by their lonesome.
The 70's were a wasteland compared to the 60's until punk came along. Most of the influential rock bands were holdovers from the 60's.

A few more who deserve mention:
Kiss
Chicago
Jackson 5
Alice Cooper
Three Dog Night
Guess Who (Canadian)
and the biggest solo artist of the decade, Elton John (British)
