Top most Overpriced brands???

In what your idea's are what is the most deceptive and overpriced brands in audio??
I'm just getting back into Audio ! so Inform me :)
Speakers that do not match there cost for Performance Ratio :grumpy:

brands that enjoy ripping people off, and leaving them wishing for better audio gear:tears:

"Deceptive" and "overpriced" and subjective. It also has to do with ones perceptions and priorities.
 
I'd be much more wary of internet "hype" than I would be of company's enjoying ripping you off. Fanboys who talk about audio more than they listen to audio will cost you more than anything else in this hobby.

Bose systems are priced way too high but.....I'll always have a pair of 301's. (Worst deals our there are most "top name" company's entry level stuff.)
 
I'll take a hit for Europe, Bang and Olufsen.
It's the archetypal system for the greed is good, city of london yuppie types.:nono:

This fits because there is real deception going on with these 'white van' folks - poor products with ficticious list prices. Bose and B&O, while pricey, are not in the business of deception but are simply responding to their markets. Nothing wrong with that in a capitalistic economy. Those of us who wouldn't buy their products simply aren't in their niche markets...many of us are in even smaller niche markets. I think chicks hit the nail on the head when it comes to answering the OP's question.
 
Those big yellow banana looking speakers that were at the CES show for 160K dollars and had no response below 50hz...what a joke.
 
I think Kharma speakers and products are WAY over-priced. They appear to be very well-designed, and use a lot of superior (and sometimes expensive) components and design features, but somehow every time I hear them in their main showroom here, they disappoint greatly. Maybe the guys just don't set them up right or something, but I don't like a soundstage where a singer's mouth is three feet wide, for example. That isn't "audiophile", but the speakers sell for fairly "obscene" prices near the very top of the market. I've heard them in one home and a couple of shows, too, and every time I've found them disappointing. They'd be okay if moderately priced; they certainly aren't awful, but in no way do they deserve the asking prices. :no: They strike me as the quintessential attempt to milk money from nouveau riche types who don't know any better; people with more money than hearing. Should sell well in Mainland China, but I wouldn't expect many "golden ear" audiophiles to spend much time with them. More hype than really satisfying substance, yet prices that will give anyone who isn't billionaire class "sticker shock"!
 
This is a good question and a reasonable issue to raise. I would answer that many of the Chinese-made brands are overpriced, as their prices are often similar to some boutique brands, yet their labor cost is very low.

Conversely, I have found that a few of the "big name" brands, such as Yamaha and Onkyo, offer excellent value. For $799.99, my A-S700 integrated is probably the best sub-$1,000 integrated I have heard.

Bang for the buck is in the eye of the beholder. I make no judgement on components, regardless of cost, unless Ive heard it. Its easy to bash a brand and say its nothing more than hype with a high price, but that same component might make all the difference in the world for somebody else.

They all have power cords in excess of $100 per foot. Cardas has one that's $722 for a half meter power cord.
