Say what you want about Bose, but if it wasn't for Bose, a lot of people wouldn't even have a stereo in their house.

Exactly. I know plenty of people with Bose. They wanted something that sounded relatively good, but werent involved in the hobby enough to seek out specialty retailers. Most of this has to do with previous exposure. If I never experienced a good hifi system, Id be happy as a lark with a boombox or a lifestyle system.

I have no issue whatsoever with Bose. They bring a lot of people music, in a way that they wouldn't have if the only option was a stereo that overtook the room. My mom being one of them, and she's had an Acoustimass system for 20 years and still loves it. Not everybody needs or wants a huge stereo. And the near-perfect frequency response of a giant system isn't needed to enjoy music.

I have a Bose sounddock that I love, sounds great. we also have a set of 301's powered by a crappy BPC receiver at the shop and I am always amazed at how good it sounds for what it is. People just love to hate on Bose but there is far worse sounding gear out there.

I think you guys nailed it with the white van stuff. If there were ever companies that really enjoy ripping people off its the people who make that crap. The fact that the completely unrealistic "msrp" is printed on the box is a clear indication of their dubious intentions.

No particular issue here with Bose (at least no more than with some other brands). In "the day," Bose was pretty high-end. I remember that on my street, the 901, Series xxx, was the speaker to own. I knew a guy that had a pair of 901 Series IVs hung from his ceiling. It saved space below, and the speakers seemed to sound pretty good. I say "seemed" because I was just a kid back then, and the music was pretty loud, too.

Ever since then, I guess, I have always had an inclination to have speaker stands of ample height. I cannot understand how people listen to mini-monitors on little 24-inch stands.

I'll take a hit for Europe, Bang and Olufsen.
It's the archetypal system for the greed is good, city of london yuppie types.:nono:

Perhaps those yuppie types know something you don't. Admittedly there are other brands that offer more value for money, but B&O at least delivers a healthy measure of performance to accompany its style. That's more than I can say for some of the other brands that have been cited in this thread.

In my opinion, NAD products are way overpriced. Most pieces of NAD gear I see on here have had some sort of major issue.

As much as I think Bose is over priced, it is not a ripoff. People like it, and it sells. I have no problem with that. I still think that all of "cube" systems I've listened to were as fatiguing as all get out, but obviously others disagree.

There is(or was?) a company up here that kinda fells between white van and a regular brand. They were called Nuance. Great big things with crappy drivers, crappy sound and a super inflated MRSP. Sold with dubious demos with Q-Sound CDs, always with a huge discount. Pawn shops around here seem to always have a few pairs of them.

Microsoft products. It's this the "emperors new clothes".
We don't even need it, alternatives are available often for free.

Linn -(and I'm a Scot)
Mission -Overpriced, plasticky goodness
Mark Levinson -It wasn't always this way
Audio Note -Tells you what good marketing can do
Focal -Real measurements popped that balloon for me.
