Toronto Kijiji - Kenwood KA-8006

thefragger

Certified Crazy.
I just spent $25 on crap for some retarded reason, then this pops up! Damnit!!

Should I still try for it? It's missing the speaker selector knob... my parents have really been on my case about all the other stuff I have and want me to start thinning it all out yesterday.

No affl, etc.

Kenwood KA-8006 Vintage Amplifier. Good Working Order, POWERFUL

Price: $50.00

Up for sale is a vintage Kenwood KA-8006 amplifier in good working order.
The body and face is in fair condition (scratches and marks) and shows signs of visible wear, however will clean right up.

Speaker "ABC" knob is missing (can still switch between speakers) and the power light has blown (easy fix). Other than that it works well and is STRONG.

Asking $50. No partouts, trades, bartering or shipping.
Local pickup & Cash only please. Contact via email and thanks for viewing my ad.

Build quality and performance is very good on these. A real under-appreciated sleeper in my books. If the cosmetics don't put you off, it is likely well worth the price.

I think it's gorgeous, if in need of a little love! But it's not in the budget; I've been buying and have no job :(

Hi Guys,

I managed to pick the amp up today. Pretty sad wood (chipped and cracked), face dingy and the speaker knob that is 'missing' is actually a sheared off speaker selector control shaft!!

It did sound pretty nice with no hum on initial test so will give it a going over in the next few days and report back.

So, yes it went to a good home! I'm pretty happy!

Hi,

Got a bit of a discount as it is really is rusty shape AND the sheared off shaft. The seller was a really nice guy and I wanted a deal for both parties...I like a deal but I am not really a bandit!

Looks like the unit spent some time on a damp floor/carpet as lots of spotty surface rust on the previously shiny metal surfaces on back panel.

Anyway, will try and get some before and after shots and of course some nudies of the little beast!

Regards,

Mitch

Sounds like it does need T.L.C. however, I will risk my reputation on the 8006. It is one hell of an amp and consitantly goes "under the radar". Usually go for less than $150 on the auction site which is a sin! If I was you, I would keep your eye open for one in better shape and consider yourself very lucky that you have a working donar unit at a reasonable price. In my opinion, change the model # to 400, as it fits right in with Kenwood's 500 and 600 series units and we know what they are!!!!

I agree that the build quality is very good.

Here is a bit more detail on my experience so far.....

Just bought a KA-8006 locally and its in a sorry state. Not pretty
now,but plugged it in, a few seconds later heard the relay click
and........and music!!! Gotta love the way old electronics just keeps
doing what is was designed to do no matter how abused it may have been!

Anyway, I would like to make it look as good as it sounds, so I have a
few issues.

The unit was advertised as "missing the speaker selector knob". Well,
I got there and the poor dusty thing was standing up on the floor and
sure enough the knob was missing, though through no fault of its own.
Actually the shaft that it is supposed to sit at the end of was
actually sheared off!! The remaining nubbin was all worn down as
speaker selection was still accomplished by a determined owner with a
pair of pliers! Sad looking!

So I am looking for:

1) a speaker selector switch (wishful thinking...will actually look at
rebuilding the shaft on the one that's there and take any advice or ideas from others who have gone down this road!!)

2) The speaker selector knob: any ideas where to look for one of these? May have to try to create a replica for now....

3) I would also like the apparently missing page from the schematic I
found in the FILES section of the KENWOODAUDIO group on Yahoo. I do not see the relay or the driver circuitry and assume it was on another page. If there is a pdf or scan of the service manual available that would be fantastic.
If someone could send or point me in the right direction I would
really appreciate it.

Thanks for your interest and any help and I will keep all informed as the resurrection moves forward!

Regards,

Mitch

Nice find! You may want to keep an eye open for a KA-4006 or 6006 to use as a parts unit. Same knobs, and I think the speaker selector switch may be the same, or at least is similar enough to use. These amps do not come up on ebay very often - maybe 4 or 5 times a year.

I have an 8006 and a 4006, and I have to say that the 4006 is very nice for a bottom of the line amp! The 8006 has a few things going for it that the model 500 and 600 don't have - a potted power transformer and switched tone controls (not pots, but hard wired switches like the 700C). On the down side is the phono stage, which is based on a very early op-amp. The op-amp is a little tin can with 8 legs (or is it 7?) - not a standard 8 pin op-amp so subbing in a modern 'super' op-amp would not be straightforward.

Hi Packrat,

Thanks for then info. I will be trying to repair the switch for now, but a replacement would be great. I'll keep a lookout for the models you mention.

As to the op amp, I am quite happy to leave the unit 'stock" but I am sure there is plenty of space in the chassis for a little daughter board for the socket and parts required to mate the newer 8 pin DIP amps with the older style can. I think its a 741 IIRC.

Thanks again for the info and if you happen to come across a required knob, please keep this fellow Ontarian in mind!

BTW you wouldn't happen to have a schematic for the speaker protection circuit? A service manual is being sought, but so far no luck finding it, apart from retail sources.

All the best and Happy Holidays,

Mitch
