Slice-o-Pioneer
Hey everyone, I recently have been selling a lot of my audio gear that i have accumulated through out the years. Before selling I tend to do a once over check up and make sure all is working so i can provide a better description and properly post for sale. Another reason and maybe even the main reason, is spending some quality time with the equipment before sending it to its new home. A final farewell- it has been great knowing you type of thing. Which has made parting with equipment just that much more difficult. On a few occasions, to avoid past regret experienced, I have even decided, not to sell after listening to my favorite bands and rediscovering them all over again just cause the audio gear made me remember why I started loving this Audio addiction to begin with. We all know that Every receiver or audio component has its own unique quality and sometimes its just fits my preferences in how i hear things. When is perfectly matched to my ears, it is a beautiful listening experience that I want to keep and not lose.
During this selling process, I have met some like minded audio enthusiasts and have ended up not selling the stereo or audio gear for top dollar like I had planned to achieve but ends up more so of trading for other gear and or minimal money as long as the deal is fair and i know it goes to good people with the same love for audio in them as me. Which generally also means , a well taken care of audio equipment. Maybe even more so than in my hands.
That all being said, one of the cool people I've met on a selling app. Has a Toshiba SR 7150 . It reminds me of a Pioneer sx3700 type of style with digital flouroscan green ./blue look but massive in size and way more power at 150wpc. He wants to make a deal for my McIntosh mx1117and McIntosh MC2120. I was not thinking of selling it so I wasn't really entertaining the thought. But he has been persistent and I can see it in his eyes he really would enjoy being the new owner of the McIntosh pieces I have. His persistence has lead me to start thinking about what would be worth it to me to part from the McIntosh.
I really don’t use the McIntosh and maybe I should let it go to a home where it will be serviced and maintained and above all enjoyed and used more instead of just having it here. But still, having a tough time seeing the justification for the trade. Then money was added along with the Toshiba Sr7150 offer. So there will Also be $1000 cash.
Still weighing out things, I think about the Toshiba receiver that I recently sold. It was a Toshiba sa350 and it was quite a nice receiver. Easy to maintain and classy handsome vintage look . Sounded really good with all types of music too. So i know Toshiba audio isn't junk.
This is the same guy who I recently sold a Marantz 2230BD to. And that was one of my favorite receivers that I had. Part of that was a pair of pioneer HPM100 in decent shape that he included in the purchasing of 2230BD to make it easier for me to sell. He has also made it clear to me that if he ever were to sell anything he got from me , that he would give me the first opportunity to buy back for same price unless some service was done or damage. So that helped make selling off my gear easier.
Even so , Its still really difficult letting go of some of my gear cause of the time and memories and also the intimate time spent in restoration of many of the stuff i have. During the peak of my collecting audio , it was also what helped me during my toughest first stages of being clean from bad habits addiction and a new life in sobriety . Some people cross addict to another drug. I cross addicted to vintage audio equipment collecting. So the equipment i have are like a member of my family.
Currently the McIntosh gear mentioned, isn't getting much usage if any. They're Just sitting pretty in my living room AV cabinet.
His Toshiba was just fully serviced and recapped etc. And Cosmetically perfect . Where as mine, needs some work inside but also cosmetically perfect . I Still have the original box they retailed in. Dont have a real connection with the McIntosh . Just got lucky ,a type of audio karma i like to believe. I acquired the McIntosh from a customer during a service call who's husband worked for McIntosh, and she had the mx1117 and mc2120 new in box with wood case + papers all still sealed. It was a score . She was just going to give them to me but I felt obligated to give her money. I believe I ended up insisting on paying her $500 for each of them.
I know some might think that is foolish of me, but i felt like it was the right thing to do, especially since she had mentioned money problems that followed with her husband’s funeral service costs .. anyways, back to subject . So if i did take the offer. i wouldn't be losing money.
Probably too much background info for what my question is. but all this has been going around my mind with what I should do if i should keep or pass on the offer.
So , finally. I ask.. Has anyone had any experience and time with a Toshiba SR7150? And does the trade and money seem decent or absurd going from McIntosh to a Toshiba monster receiver?
This wouldn't be a thing of hesitation if he had a pioneer sx1980 plus the $1000. Since i am a Pioneer loving guy. But its not a sx1980. He does have a sx980 he says. But that model is not really helping the decision.
So I just had to consult the knowledge base here and get some level headed and ‘sound’ advice from members here to help me make a decision.. Toshiba? Or Not Toshiba ? Good deal or not even close? Any thoughts insights opinions technical comparisons , i mean any suggestions or if you had same choice to consider what would you all do. ?
