Toshiba reciever sounds "tinny" and small

Inherited my grandfather's Toshiba SA-735. I cleaned the face and knobs and it looks great! I found two blown output fuses and replaced them. I get sound now but the sound is small like it's playing in a tin can. All of the functions and switches appear to be working properly but the sound isn't right. I don't have scratching or static when I work the switches. Any suggestions?

Moving this to solid state. Does not sound like a Tuner (radio) issue. Sounds to me like blown output transistors.

That sa 735 is a pioneer copy to my eye. Innards I have to check and compare but anyway you could have caps that have gone bad. Check if any of those transistors gets hot. Careful, don't shock yourself and don't fry the thing.
Cool.

Thanks, for the input. I'll check the transistors. BTW, I've plugged in headphones into the front jack and the sound is just as it should be. I may need to tear into the speaker boxes. Possible I have two bad woofers?

I doubt it's the speakers. There is probably a short somewhere in the power supply that cause the output transistors in both channels and perhaps some components in each driver board to fry. The headphone jack is just driven by the preamp, so you may get good sound out of headphones but still get nothing from the speakers.

I just discovered while attempting to hook it up to my newer Yamaha as a pre-amp to an 8-track deck...I'm only getting one channel. The one channel sounds decent through the Yamaha but it's only putting out one side. However, it does put out sound through both speakers just not in the headphones or via the tape-out connections

Have you tried cleaning the switches? Even exercising them a few dozen times can help.

I was playing mine today. The on/A/Off/B/A+B is classic failure item. Mine will work perfectly, be dead completely, flash lights and make poor sound, lose 1 channel all in under a second.
Turning it on as well, requires percussive maintenance.
Its got those Toshiba 2sa716/2sc1162. I am calling it a sx880 clone from my rough memory of the 880.
Cool.

I've been continually working and cleaning the knobs and switches. It seems to be working but I'm still losing and regaining one channel. Seems to be in the tape/monitor switch. I might also take a second look at my RCA wires
