Saw this on craigslist. The seller is offering it at $65. Says it's very clean sound system from the 70's. I'm currently using my HK 330c as my basement system and was wondering if anyone has an opinion on this Toshiba SA-S55. From the pictures I've found on google, it looks really nice....Just wanted to know if anyone has one as well and how it performs. Thanks in advance!

This is definitely not from the 70s. I'd peg it early-mid 80s judging by the digital tuner and display (looks to be vacuum fluorescent from the thumbnails).

The wood makes me lean more towards early 80’s.

1980/81/82, I'd say. Same time as Toshiba's SA-5000/-3500/-2500, which still had tuner sections with analogue scale. Should have been the successor of the SA-850.

Toshiba is one of those funny brands, (like Sanyo), that doesn't seem to carry the panache of names like Pioneer, Sansui, Yamaha, etc. But it can be decent equipment. That one looks nice.

UPDATE 4 years later: I picked up this unit way back when. It's been a solid performer for my basement systerm. That said, it's developed a "crackling" on the left channel regardless of output (FM radio, PHONO, or AUX). I am trying to find a service manual either here or hifiengine but I haven't had any luck.

Any specific transistors/caps I should be looking at replacing?

TIA...JP
