Toshiba SR-250

I'm trying to find some more info on this TT, but it appears finding info on Toshiba TTs is pretty hard to come by. Does anyone have any experience (opinions) or more info on this table?

I have the DD Toshiba SR255 and it is very similar to your 250. I find it to be an excellent table equaled only by my Yamaha YP-701 and surpassed by my Hitachi -561.

Indeed the Toshiba is actually more versatile as my Yamaha hates tall cartridges. To my ears Pickering cartridges with good styli are a wonderful match for the 255 producing wonderfully detailed, three dimensional sound. I should think the 250 would produce similar vibrations.

And, no, there is very little out there on any Toshiba tables though I did manage to find a scan of the owner's manual for the 255 at Vinyl Engine.

EDIT: Check for this table as a Technics SL-23. That may help.

I picked up a Toshiba SR 355 with a Pickering cartridge, and have been very happy with it. Same mat as yours, but mine looks a bit more worn. I wish there was a bit more information on it.

Thanks for the input!. The only issue I've seen so far is when the record is over, the tone arm lifts but doesn't return. Any ideas on what would be causing that?

On "auto lift" turn tables, that is all there is.

The idea is to have as little attachments to the tone arm mechanism as possible.

That way there are less mechanical impediment to the tone arm - "high fidelity" sound reproduction. :thumbsup:

Your turn table may be an auto lift model. :idea:
 
That would make sense. Can anyone help identify this cart? I'm thinking it may be the AT-10G, but I'm not sure. I was able to pick up this TT for $25! New belt should be here Monday!

It's an AT10/11 variant. Green stylus usually indicates the AT11E. Nice cartridges, one of my favourites from Audio Technica.
 
I got the new belt installed and everything seems to be working fine, even the auto return. I pulled the cart off the headshell and it's a Audio Technica HP-100MKii. Any recommendations for a stylus replacement? It looks like my options are the ATS10, ATS11, ATS11E, ATS12 or ATS12C.
 
I haven't been checking the forum much lately so I've only now just found this post. I've had a Toshiba SR-250 for about 5 years, and I really like it. As you know, it's a basic belt-drive semi-automatic, and no, there's not much information on Toshibas out there. It's my second Toshiba (I also have an SR-355). The SR-250 was made ca. 1976. When I got mine, it was missing its feet, mat, counterweight, and headshell. I gradually acquired everything that it was missing, but (until just the other day) I've never been able to find either a service manual or an owners manual. Finally, an owners manual showed up on eBay over the holidays, and I snagged it. I'm attaching a copy here (I've already uploaded a copy to Vinyl Engine earlier this morning). Toshiba turntables don't seem to have been widely distributed in the US during the '70's. They appear to have had a better distribution network in Canada (at least I've noticed that used Toshibas turn up far more frequently in Canada [on eBay Canada and on Cannuck Audio Mart] than they do in the U.S). My guess is that the SR-250 was made by CEC, though there's a guy who sells an occasional SR-250 on eBay (refinished in various wood veneers) who claims that this model was made by Micro Seiki, which I tend to doubt. I don't know what the source of his information is. He, by the way, is in Canada.

I sold Toshiba in the late70's and 80's great equipment that just worked. The recievers were nice too kind of like Hitachi equip. I really liked their cassette decks they had a nice look.

Thanks for the owners manual! I settled up on the the ATS11 (Genuine AT11 replacement) with the same cartridge, the AT-HP-100MKii. Hooked into my Sansui 6060 with Pioneer CS-700G speakers it sounds great to me!

My SR 250 came from Canada too. The rubber and spring feet were all there but awkward and very loose. It's a 120 volt model which requires me to use a step down transforner with it.

Every now and again the electronic speed control has a wobble, but after a few adjustments of the speed control, there's one for 33 and one for 45, it settles down nicely and holds speed very well with no wow or flutter. The platter is reasonably heavy. Replacement belts are easy to get.

Looks good - no marks of use. A slight scratch on otherwise excellent perspex lid easily polished out with toothpaste and a soft cloth! Design is simple and clean very discreet. I like that.

The auto return and stop is great. But BEWARE there is no manual lift or cueing on this model. To start you have to lift the arm by finger and lower it yourself onto the LP directly. YOU NEED A STEADY HAND.

The headshell is standard. The Shure N75 EJ was fitted and I quite like this cartridge, also the Shure 70 EJ. With my other decks I prefer the Philips GP412.

I have over the years (ten years and its still going strong no issues) looked out for another one on Ebay but have NEVER seen one come up. This might be because it was a transitional product quickly superseded by direct drive turntables coming down in price.

It's travelled (well packed of course) in two house moves including 6 months in storage in a warehouse - plus the initial transatlantic journey! So its built rugged.

Highly recommended. Would pay $150 straight away for an excellent example.
