wow, have prices climbed over the yrs.I know l those pieces and owned 2 of them and think back at what I payed for them and what I sold them for.The HPM 150's are a good speaker ,as well the sx1980 is a decent piece if you like bragging rights for the biggest receiver produced by pioneer but can be bettered sound wise , with solid seperates from the many different optiones out there..
I know id never drop 4k on those pieces myself
I wouldn't drop $4K if I was going to keep it, I just thought if I could get a serviced 1980 instead of my non-serviced one for close to nothing, it would be nice.
It's a lot more than quality to some. Nostalgia might come in to play, but me personally who owns the 1280 and a 1250 and only dream to have the HPM 150's it's about the quality/looks combo. I am not just a quality only person but it has to look nice and I have ALWAYS been a wood/metal decor type person. My house is littered with wood / copper / stone / other metal and you cant beat the look of those late 70's pioneer units. I'm sure you can buy a whole lot better for 4k on the receiver end, but I bet it wouldn't be quite as cool (with some exceptions of course!)
Back when I owned the 1980 I also owned a 1250 and I compared the 2 many time preferring the sound of the 1250.In those days a near perfect shape sx 1250 would sell around 4-500/ and a sx 1980 around 650-700,00.,my hpm 150's I picked up for 400.00 and sold for 8 00,this was in the early 2000's.I had the big filter caps changed out in the 1250 when I decided to keep it and that ran about 300.00 and it did give me peace of mind so see where your comeing from Dobyman.
I say this all the time on these threads but if sound means anything to you ,that 4 k will go a long ways with tube gear which will better any of these old recievers any day of the week.If you happen to be buying for any other reason ie a collector or to flip well that's different
I agree with you on the tube gear. That's why I wouldn't keep the 150's. My Cornwalls can handle my 1980 or my Maggie 9300 tube amp. I know where there is a pair of 150's, but the lady wont part with them. They need refoaming too, but she wont do that either. Probably will end up with her teenage son blowing them up. Sad......
Yea.....as I don't have some of the stuff listed anymore.....just lazy and never updated.... Very nice seller and settled on a much nicer price. This stuff is mint.
Happy for you! Like I said, I was tempted, and I was fairly close to it, but I am glad you got it, and for a decent price. It all looked too good to be true to get all of that in one place, so I am sure you will be a happy audiophile. Congrats!

Thanks!....bit of a drive but worth it. The woofers are new....well newer...as he ordered a pair from Pioneer when he learned they had three pair left. Even the service manual for the 1980 looks new...with all the schematics for fold out in it. Helluva nice couple also....enjoyed them very much,,..and made the trip pleasant.
As strange as it seems, you can meet some great people on craigs list. So far 99.9% of my meetings have been great people. They are after the same things you are. A great deal on a great item from nice people.
Again, congrats on the score.
