Trade BIC Venturi six for Large advent?

Quick speaker question.
I have the opportunity to trade my descent pair of BIC Venturi six speakers for a pair of Large advent (1969 - 1977) with Walnut veneer with Bullnose front that may need a refoam job.
Should I pursue the trade?:scratch2:

IMO it is a no brainer....grab the Advents!
If you want further confirmation search this site and see what is said about the BIC and compare it to what is said about Large Advents. A quick Google search should also confirm the different opinions people have about these speakers.
 
From my recollection, those BICs are quite a bit different from the Advents sonically.
If your a high volume rocker, you may prefer the BICs to the Advents.

Also Advents are much more plentiful than the BICs. I've had dozens of them over the years and have about 9 sets right now; I think I've only seen one set of the big BICs.

FWIW, the Advent may be a "better" speaker, but the BIC is much less common.
 
As long as you listen to a variety of types of music, the Advent is a far superior speaker to the BIC--IMHO.

Mostly notably, the Advent has a much tighter, cleaner sounding bass and the ability to reproduce lower bass.

I've heard both and also would take the Advent. For a bit different take there is a lot more "tweak info" on Advent. Also I believe AK member Zilch was posting about developing the waveguide concept for the Advent. Backburner thing for him right now but it might be fun to try if he comes up with something.

OK majority rules, will tongue oil the Bic's and try to make the trade, should go thru since it was not my idea. I listen to all types of music with an emphasis of classical music so should be a good choice.

I would trade in a heartbeat! I believe the BIC Venturi speakers have vinyl veneer, so I wouldn't go putting tung oil on them without finding out first!
 
I know my dad's BIC Venturi Model 66s (IIRC) were real walnut veneer...maybe Peter's BIC Venturis are a different model; I'm not really familiar with the brand since my dad owned them only for a year and then traded them in for a new pair of '79 Klipsch Cornwalls.
 
Advents have a similar sound to the Lancer 77’s?

My BIC Venturi are in beautiful perfect condition Walnut, (no scratches), but could use a light 0000 steal wool rub and a couple of coats of oil worked in and rubbed off immediately.
The Advents come from a good source but the there is no guarantee that they work. I looked at them briefly and noted that the cabinets were in very nice condition. They are not in use now and have not been used for at least a couple of years, maybe 5 or 10.
I traded some of my work for a pair of Lancer 77’s from the same source and after refinishing them with the 0000 and oil, reforming and fix the speaker connector, I am very happy, they are probably 9.5 out of 10 examples now.
Do properly working Advents have a similar sound to the Lancer 77’s? I sure like the Lancer 77’s

Consider using tung oil. Even with perfect walnut cabinets you'd need to worry about getting splinters if you use tongue oil. :p:

Seriously -- if your cabinets are in good shape, save some time and consider wiping them down with Old English lemon oil instead of the tung oil treatment. I am amazed at how well that stuff works on speaker cabinets.

Large Advents are a sweet speaker indeed. :yes:

Let's see, it was 1975 or was it 1976. I made an impulse speaker buy--BIC Venturi Formula 4. Very bright and brash, although in fairness I have to say the room they were in had many hard surfaces, except for the acoustical tile ceiling.

Let's see, it was 1976 or was it 1977. A friend made an impulse speaqker buy--my BIC Venturis. He was happy as he liked loud. I promptly bought my new Large Advents with bullnose trim. Advents are still around.

You don't say if the BIC's are series I or II. Completely different sounding speakers. I would trade 6/I's for the Advents, but I love my 6/II's which are far better, IMO anyway.
 
Get the Advents. Where else can you get such a deal on one of the 25 best speakers of the last 40 years, acc. to Stereophile? ;)

The owner of the Advents looked at the Bic's and is "leaning towards the trade", so the trade is alive but not made yet. Hopefully I will soon have pictures of my first indoor Advents.

Made the trade

Have the Advents and can't wait to try them out. They appear to be in very nice condition.
Are these the "large Advents",do they look original?

Those woofers are the later version w/o the Masonite ring, but aside from that look nice.
