Just some midnight fodder......
A few years ago, I was assigned a side job to clear out a home that was going up for sale. The deceased owner was a hoarder and had filled the house with A LOT of everything..... It was my job to trash as much as possible before the house went on the market. I did my best to salvage anything I thought worthwhile. I brought home 3 sets of speakers but regret to admit that the "old" amplifiers were tossed in the dumpster. Oops; had to work and couldn't save it all......
Two of the sets were Radio Shack speakers(~1970s- 1980s). They had been set up as the primary speakers in the owner's music room, so I assumed they must be half decent and appeared well built. I took them home and enjoyed them in the garage for a summer before eventually tossing them. Something in the wiring was going bad, possibly a few of the tweeters, and I didn't have the space to store them until I could fix them. They were "just" Radio Shack speakers after all, but I will admit that they seemed well made. Probably another oops but such is life.
The 3rd set of speakers I found were a set of JBL L40 whose foam rings were dry rotted but otherwise seemed to be in fairly great condition. One of the grill cover pegs had been broken off but there was no other visible damage. I never had the time or space to refoam them, so they sat in storage for the last few years. I recently moved and decided it was time to either try my hand at a repair or to part ways.
I ordered the refoam kit from Simply Speakers. I watched a few different videos and tried my luck. I was not expecting the glue to be quite so similar to how stringy hot glue can be. Definitely not grade A work and there is a lot of room for improvement but I am so glad I tried. These things sound great! Still trying to figure out how everything will be arranged, so they have not been properly positioned. Building stands is somewhere in the future.... Will need to figure out how to make them child proof as well. (The cat did cat things: slept in and then threw up on one of the speaker grill covers when it was removed and laying on a table... )
The Advent speakers are also on the refoam/ to do list as well; one of my dad's old yardsale finds. Should have made them my first refoam project as they appear to mount on the front of the cone, unless I am mistaken?
Currently running the JBL's on an Aiyima A07 amp and Echo Dot.(Honestly, a great budget solution to make an old set of speakers smart and multi-room)
The Wiim Amp looks like a promising all-in-one solution to help integrate the TV and bring higher quality streaming, while maintaining a small form factor. Does anyone have any experience with it and/or other recommendations? Will most likely be running 2.0 only due to current space restrictions.
