As a tribute to the great supergroup/misfit family, if another generation of Wilburys decided to return to their musical roots, who would they be??

Here is the original family tree:

Volume 1
"Nelson Wilbury" – George Harrison

"Lefty Wilbury" – Roy Orbison

Petty, Dylan, and Lynne could return to the lineup with some additional "family" to bring on the revival....

I like the idea of Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton(dear friend and wife-keeper of Nelson and Spike), KD Lang, and Elvis Costello (Both part of the coconut grove/Lefty Wilbury gig). Of course, Ayrton could appear to keep the Beatle connection alive with Ringo. And the rumors of the Del Shannon arrival ended with his passing...

Who would your "next generation" Wilbury's be???

any saturday takers? Im back on my semiannual Roy Orbison kick, and am always left saying what if....
 
I have never thought about it before... I always figured that kind of lightning-in-a-bottle couldn't be caught twice.

This got me thinking about the age and career standing of the Wilburys, when they got together in 1988. Roy Orbison (b. 1936) was the oldest, and Tom Petty (b. 1950) was the young'un. At age 52, Roy Orbison was younger in '88 than Elvis Costello (age 58) is today. Orbison was (slightly) younger in '88, than pioneer alt-rockers like Yo La Tengo & Sonic Youth are today. What sort of super-group could come together, who are around the 38-52 year age range of the original Wilburys? Some established major artists who might conceivably want to form a group. Let's start with ... Michael Stipe, Courtney Love, and Slash? No, let's not....

EC’s old friend Nick Lowe might have something to contribute to this lineup.

If you have Richard Thompson on board, his son Teddy (very talented guy) could join in from time to time too.

(Having brought up the "born 1960-1974" age range, I'm drawing a blank on "New Wilburys"-worthy candidates from this group.... hmmm....)
 
Mark Knopfler is a good choice. He has already done similar material with the Notting Hillbillies.
Nora Jones might be a good fit.
