Trio KA-4002a - Now arrived/needing help

Sorry about the delay - I've just spent three or four hours, first listening to a new 'Country' program - which subject I'm finally getting 'acquainted-with'; then some 'Filler-Rock' [without a DJ]; and finally some ['DJ'd'] Mozart! I've been reminding myself how my Goodmans sound, after a bit of a hiatus [I lifted them up
].
And, yes! I'd really love to get a tuner to match. Thank you very much!! PM me on how you see that working.
You got it, apart from liking Supertramp, my avatar is both a reminder of my past and a metaphorical representation of my present [i.e. Returned to doss-down in the UK]. I did not move back into the Black Country but I'm only 20 minutes east of it [in 'deepest' Birmingham ] - so I regularly drive over to visit relatives - and friends from my childhood :yes:

As discussed in our [very informative, for me] PMs: Having a matching tuner for my little TRIO is a great concept :yes:. But based on the perspective of my track record with 'fixer-uppers'; the fact that I'd got the Sony ST-S530ES, on it's way to me when you mentioned your tuner [see 'Tuners']; plus a quick review of my existing 'must-have' list, such a tuner will have to wait.
Also - after the fact - those links to the various amps that you PMd me have now 'bumped' themselves up towards the top of my list - ain't life hard sometimes

First some scans of the KA-4002A user manual, which tells a bit more what the exact purpose of the mono out function is: a center speaker in case the left and right channel speakers are too wide apart for a decent stereo spacing... but you would need an additional (mono) amp for that (that isn't a problem, ain't it?). The mono output line voltage is 1 volts, so one could also use for mono recordings.

Have a nice Ka-4002 myself and was wondering where (what points) you set the bios voltage (20MA?) Doesn't show in any of the schematics. Want to set this correctly. I have a schematic but lost my service manual. Thanks

A few years ago I was given a KA-4002A. I didn't pay much attention to it, because it didn't look like anything special - not to me anyway. I put it on a bottom shelf in the attic somewhere, and forgot all about it. Until a few days ago, when I happened to come across it. I took it down with me, to see if it worked at all, and if it was worth keeping. What a nice surprise! Not only is it in very good working condition, but the sound it produces is just great, much better than I expected. It's definitely a keeper, ''to have and to hold'' so to say. I managed to find the matching tuner for 10 euros on a Dutch auction site, it should arrive tomorrow, and then I'll have a very nice amp / tuner set. I intend to use it in combination with a pair of old Wharfedale Linton 3XP's that I saw at a thrift store today, and that are roughly the same age as the Kenwood amp if i'm not mistaken.
Anyway, here are some pics of the inside. It definitely needs cleaning, but I hope you'll like them anyway.

Yes, and they all seem to be in very good condition, even after all these years. No sign of leakage anywhere. Are these orange caps anything special? I don't know a thing about electronics, but I'm always willing to learn.
Btw, the tuner did arrive todat, very poorly packed (squeezed into a box that was only just big enough), but fortunately it survived the trip. I'm listening to it now. It's in very good condition, all lights are working, strong stereo signal even with a simple piece of wire serving as FM antenna. The quality of the sound is not exactly great, but after what I had read on the fmtunerinfo website, I wasn't expecting too much anyway. But it looks great, in combination with the amp :thmbsp: !

I am not an authority on the orange caps. I believe the consensus is that they are low-leakage, although maybe they have other special properties as well. I have seen them used more sparingly in other amps than in yours. For example, I have a KA-4006 that had only one orange cap, and an A7 (early '80s BOTL Kenwood) that used two orange caps. In studying pics of other amps it seems that use of the orange caps is sparse.
It is also interesting that pics of oldringo's KA-4002a show none that I can see. Maybe there are "special" caps in it but of a different color, I don't know.

I found the KA-2002A yesterday in a Kringloopwinkel but didn't buy it. I bought another amp. But this 4002 is just marvelous!!
