Hello, long time lurker first time poster here.
I got my hands on a TRIO WE-8S for a very fair price. The unit needed some technical attention and TLC.
I cleaned it, re-capped the electrolytics, and it came back to life wonderfully. the tuner and all inputs seemed to work well.
I started using it as my main for a while, but slowly got the suspicion that something is off. the sound was, tiring, for lack of a better term.
On closer inspection, and comparison to other receivers I have, I noticed that sound is kind of muddy. Too bassy, And not in a tight, fun way. The first proper red flag was the phono input - sludgy muffled sound, almost unlistenable. the same issue happens in the aux as well, to a much lesser extent. I tried to figure out the culprit, to no success. So i come to you, mighty experts of Audiokarma, to seek help and guidance. any suggestions for what i can try next?
A few important points of what I already tried:
1. Different receivers, speakers and turntables. The issue is definitely with the unit. all other components work well with different equipment.
2. The tubes: I re-sited, cleaned the contacts, swapped the EL84s and the 12AX7s (respectively, of course). nothing seems to change to outcome.
3. Balancing the bass and treble potentiometers.
4. Playing through turning on and off - It seems that for a minute or so after turning on, the sound is clearer and more balanced, and then slowly getting worse as the unit warms up.
