Blue Shadow
Waiting for Vintage Gear from this century
I don't use headphones, I have speakers and no limit as to their use but need a set of cans for diagnostics. I have a set of MDR-M77 from 1984 that have an open lead going to the other side so that channel was intermittent then gone. Sure would like to find some of the flexible, dual-conductor wire used for this to replace what I have. So with this bad set of cans, I look at CL and see what is out there.
A couple days ago a pair of Sony F1s showed up and I made arrangements to pick them up as they were not expensive and would do what I need after reading they were pretty decent. I then found out how special these are. Sure not much bass cause they are open air but the soundfield is huge.
These cans have a magnesium frame that holds the driver away from the ear and the driver is angled to fire into the ear, mounted further away toward the back of the phones. An interesting design for sure. Here is a bay borrowed pic that shows the arrangement of the drivers fixed on the frame. The wording is on the back side of the driver.

Got these the way we would like to get out cl buys, like new, with the accessories (¼" to 3.5mm adapter, pleather bag and brochure discussing the technology) at a great price.
I listened to these for a few hours last night, very comfortable. I could see using these and a sub as the main rig at times.
They are not as good as the Koss ESP-6 set I had years ago but those Koss required one to have head supports and being closed they clamped the head.
Looking forward to using these some more with a unit that I can use the tone controls. Here is the pair I got, like new with the name branded ear pads and head band in great condition.

Thing I like best, since Sony cans are MDR, these can go by their F1 designation.
