Trivia: Bob Cummings movie circa 1945 with empty mansion

which reminded me of a movie. I can't find it on IMDB. It has to be from around 1945 because the housing shortage is key to the plot and Cummings plays a freshly-discharged veteran who can't find a home.

The movie starts out with Cummings being evicted. Cummings and an old homeless guy find an unoccupied mansion in the city; they sneak in intending to squat there.

The mansion belongs to a wealthy family with multiple homes. When their rebellious daughter disappears from college, she goes to their NYC summer home to hide out. Dad hires a detective to find her. She goes to the mansion and finds the squatters. At this point I dozed off...

I remember seeing that a long time ago, can't remember the name though.
Does he try to pass off the house as his to impress the Daughter?

Don DeFore not Bob Cummings but they are similar types.
 
I remember that one too....the homeless man came to that house every year right after the owners went south for the winter. That was a good story !
 
The title is " It Happened on 5th Avenue". It has Charles Ruggles, Don DeFore, Victor Moore in it. Been watching it fore a couple of Christmases now. On Turner Classics Movies "Greatest Classic Films" collection. Has Christmas in Connecticut, A Christmas Carol, The Shop Around the Corner also in the collection.
 
I thought of this thread yesterday while watching "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" which was nothing special. Eddie Bracken plays a toy-store owner; I had to look in IMDB to find him. Some of the action occurs in a vacant brownstone in NYC. Bracken was the best part of "Home Alone 2." He's about the same vintage as Cummings and DeFore!
 
Something along the same lines is The More The Merrier with Charles Coburn, Joel McCrea and the wonderful Jean Arthur. It's actually available on YouTube along with a slew of other oldies. And if you like Jean Arthur then also check out The Devil and Miss Jones (not the Devil In Miss Jones ;) which also features Bob Cummings. And for the Eddie Bracken fans check out The Miracle of Morgan's Creek. A great Preston Sturges film with Bracken, Betty Hutton and William Demarest.

Okay, a few weeks old. This is the one that came to mind right away. I think it's better than the other film.
