Hi! Im new to the forum, so I hope I've posted correctly.
Im having trouble with my daily driver (and only reciever), a Marantz 2226b. Bought it refurbished about 4 years ago, and have never had a problem with it until this week.
I can use a soldering iron, and have repaired electronics before, but this is a bit too complicated for me. Im hoping someone can point out where the problem is located.
Loud popping and crackling in the left speaker. If I switch speaker outputs the popping appears in the right speakers, so the reciever is the problem. The secondary output from the reciever is also noisy, so the problem is not in the output ports. If I press the Tape 1 monitor button, Mono or Loudness, a loud pop is heard from the left speaker. The volume of the pop is relevant to the volume knob. Turning the volume knob also produces some crackling from the left speaker. The Low and Hi filter buttons don't make any noise. There seems to be the same amount of pops, both in volume and frequency, in both the Aux input (connected to a television) and from the Tape 2 input (connected to a phono-preamp and a Technics 1210). The popping comes at random, then disapears again. I can always produce it by wiggeling the controls. Turning the EQ-knobs changes the EQ of the pops (sounds like they are mostly in the bass).
The unit has not been recapped or serviced while Ive owned it.
Noise appeard in all the knobs at the same time (sometime during the last few days), so I dont this its an issue with dirty pots (I've also tried to clean them with contact cleaner without any results).
Bad transistor somewhere?
Here is the service manual. https://www.audioservicemanuals.com/m/marantz/marantz-2226/459031-marantz-2226-b-service-manual
