Troubleshooting CD Players

Hello, I bought a Sony X333-ES with faulty tray, which I managed to solve (belt issue). Then a second problem became apparent: the laser lightens and tries to focus, but the CD never spins. Any advice from your experience?

If it's the spindle motor you would hear a sizzling sound. You can give the motor a little spin, clockwise, and if it continues to spin you have a bad motor. A bad spindle motor in a Sony home CD player is rare. In 40 years of servicing them I think I've replace 2 motors.
Dr, is there possibly a laser power adjustment on the board as a last ditch effort? Couldn't hurt if the laser is suspect.

I just checked: inserted a CD, I heard the laser trying to focus and then nothing. After that I tried to spin manually the CD and it spins freely on both clock and anti clockwise.

Did you clean the laser lens? I watch (too many) Spare Time Repair videos on YouTube, and the guy cleans the lens on almost every CD player that he looks at. I bought one of the swing arm Magnavoxes and it didn't read anything. Popped it open, saw the lens was covered with some goop, cleaned it, and it works fine.

I clean the lens on every CD player with read problems and it rarely fixes it.

Yes, I cleaned the lens, but it didn't correct the issue.

Too bad - coming from camera repairs, I was dubious of cleaning laser lenses - they are coated plastic and I wasn't sure what would be safe to use on them. But Spare Time's sometimes vigorous cleaning suggested to me that I was over cautious. And in the case of the Magnavox, it worked immediately. So I thought it worth asking..
